The GIX MakerSpace provides students access to equipment, training and space, creating a social and collaborative environment for students to work on their projects together in teams to accelerate the impact of their innovations through design thinking and DIY engineering. We have an outstanding opportunity for a GIX MakerSpace Technical Specialist to be responsible for overseeing the set up and maintenance of the MakerSpace at CoMotion and GIX and for selecting, procuring and installing equipment, developing policies and training programs, supervising support staff, and ensuring the use of the MakerSpace to appropriately support MSTI program objectives.
The GIX MakerSpace Technical Specialist is expected to exercise independent judgment in the primary responsibility for equipment and procedures which involve significant financial investment and personal safety considerations for the University of Washington's student and faculty community. This position requires frequent interactions both within and outside the University community. Using good judgment and effectively representing the GIX facility and program to an international academic and industry audience are necessary components of this position. The MakerSpace Technical Specialist must be able to develop a thorough knowledge of a significant and evolving range of equipment function, maintenance, safety procedures and makerspace best practices, and an understanding of program curriculum and learning objectives activities to coordinate appropriate demonstration and training activities. The Technical Specialist has delegated authority to perform their professional level administrative functions.
The GIX MakerSpace Technical Specialist will enable the effective operation and showcasing of a cornerstone of the GIX facility and enable student team and project success, enabling the GIX community to fulfill its mission of developing technology innovation leaders and entrepreneurs. This position partners with external experts and vendors, faculty and staff from UW EO, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, and Foster Business School to deliver an integral component of the MSTI program learning experience.
Review and Implementation of MakerSpace Equipment Plan: 40%
Review, evaluate, and update equipment needs for GIX fabrication labs and Maker Spaces including equipment types, models and maintenance and replacement schedules in accordance with MSTI program curriculum requirements
Determine the design of Maker Space and equipment layout
Create and manage procurement plan
Determine appropriate equipment to order that coordinates with GIX MakerSpace curriculum
Create procedure and implement process for ordering equipment
Responsible to ensure all equipment is installed, tested and working properly
Coordinate with Pinnacle (consulting firm that Microsoft hiring to help with MakerSpace setup)
Definition and Oversight of Equipment Policies and Procedures: 30%
Knowledge of proper use for all equipment in GIX MakerSpace to create operating procedures
Develop safety and operating policies and procedures
Develop and oversee training activities for MakerSpace equipment
Create and manage schedules for equipment usage
Create documentation for training and responsibility of training users on safe and appropriate use of equipment
Accountable for continuous review and update of safety processes and documentation
Work with Environmental Health and Safety on incident reports, audits, and standard operating procedures
MakerSpace Management and Leadership: 30%
Develop plan for shop oversight and staffing including hiring and management of shop support staff and monitors
Responsible for managing MakerSpace budget with equipment and staffing
Troubleshoot equipment and ensure timely repairs as need to minimize workflow interruption
Advise on equipment replacement - determine the proper working condition of equipment and threshold for repairs or replacement
Manage maintenance and repairs with vendors and with consideration to academic program schedules
Serve as backup contact for UW-IT
Manage and maintain accurate material inventory and requisition process
Manage material budgets for students and teams and reimbursement
| Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline or related field and 4-5 years of relevant experience related to operation and maintenance of technical fabrication and prototyping equipment |
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Experience in MakerSpace environment, preferably as supervisor
Experience supervising student workers or learners
Experience in developing Health and Safety procedures for technical equipment or lab environments
Interest/abilities in physical computing, open source hardware and software, video and audio production, and desktop fabrication.
Experience with two or more of the following technologies and some knowledge of the rest: 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving, milling, PCB fabrication, Raspberry Pi or Arduino, 3D scanning, digital design and modeling software (SolidWorks, Rihno, etc), CNC fabrication or related DIY/makerspace technologies
Demonstrated ability providing one-on-one or small group instruction/tutorials
Ability to engage effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
