Purpose of Position:
The individuals filling this position will serve as night time supervisors for housestaff members in the care of new and existing patients on the general internal medicine wards as well as on other services. They will additionally have direct responsibilities for patient care.
This position offers generous protected time for academics; 35% protected academic time, 65% clinical time.
1. Teaching: In the clinical setting, the individuals filling this position will use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice at the bedside in the care of patients. They will role model professionalism, evidence-based practice, excellence in teamwork and coordination care, and the delivery of safe, effective, efficient care in our inpatient medical setting. They will teach daily; learners will include senior residents, interns, students. The individuals in this position will be responsible for establishing an effective learning climate, setting clearly articulated goals for learners, teaching, evaluation and providing feedback regularly. Academic protected time for developing and refining Night Medicine curriculum, other academic pursuits, and/or research. Support will be provided for developing an academic career, presenting research at national meetings, and publications.
2. Clinical: Admit and manage patients overnight on the General Medicine
and other housestaff teams, comply in a timely manner with all
institutional policies for professional work including credentialing, documentation, billing; work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team. Excellent clinical time schedule; 5 nights on 10 off. Almost half of the clinical time is direct hands-on clinical care, other is teaching and supervision of Internal Medicine Residents. Guaranteed compensation without productivity pressures.
3. Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.) Attendance at morning teaching conferences
Board certification or eligibility in internal medicine, direct experience managing complex inpatients, competency in standard inpatient procedures, a solid understanding of the hospitalist role and function, and an interest in teaching and growth in an academic setting. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
