INDEPENDENCE MISSION SCHOOLS
The Board of Directors of the Independence Mission Schools (IMS) seeks a dynamic, visionary and inspirational leader as its next President. Exhibiting a strong commitment to lifting children and families out of poverty through education, the next President of IMS will lead this 501(c)(3) non-profit to continued growth and achievement through entrepreneurial leadership, and a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success.
Founded in 2013 by a group of philanthropists and engaged citizens who remain actively involved in its success, IMS provides sustainable, high-quality, Catholic education to children of all faiths through a unique and successful model of governance, funding and accountability. The IMS network is made up of 15 inner-city Catholic schools that serve nearly 5,000 students, from Pre-K to Grade 8. In addition to the nearly 300 talented and committed educators in the network schools, the IMS central office is home to 18 full-time staff members who are strongly dedicated to IMS’s mission, vision and values.
Since its inception, IMS schools’ enrollment has increased 25%, reversing the local, and national, trend of declining enrollment in Catholic schools. While approximately 78% of students are not Catholic, families value the faith-based education, and actively seek enrollment in these schools due to their reputation for academic excellence, safety, and a strong ‘family’ atmosphere. IMS values and embraces each child, leading students on a path to a promising future and confidence in their own worth so that they are successful both in the classroom, and in their lives.
The President of IMS is the chief executive officer of the organization and reports directly to the IMS Board of Directors. The President is directly responsible for leading the central office to effectively and efficiently provide services to the schools, and for ensuring the success of school leaders by providing the strategic vision, plan, and infrastructure needed to sustain and grow the network. The new President will have the unique opportunity to build and grow the organization and strengthen the management team. S/he will also have the compelling challenge to move IMS from its initial startup phase towards the further codification of best practices, policies and procedures as well as laying the foundation for IMS’s continued growth and sustainability.
Key qualifications include: a record of proven and successful leadership; an entrepreneurial spirit; an understanding and commitment to the mission, vision and values of Catholic education; the ability to be a strategic risk-taker; a collaborative management style; an articulate and charismatic public presence; an understanding of the challenges and complexities facing urban educational institutions; and a meaningful and quantifiable commitment to issues of diversity and inclusion.
