Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones.
As a key steward of the University's facilities, FM is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, grounds, recycling, asbestos, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.
With general guidance from the Associate Vice President of Facilities Management (FM), the Associate Director of FM Operations partners with colleges /units, as well as all sections in FM to leverage the resources of Infrastructure Properties and Planning (IPP) to steward Cornell's facilities in a consistent manner that supports the university's mission of teaching, research and outreach.
The Associate Director of FM Operations directs and manages maintenance operations to partner with EH&S, Utilities, and Unit Facilities staff in support of infrastructure and building maintenance and testing/inspection activities. This person also provides leadership and guidance to Operations managers for the Mechanical, Electric, Controls, Fabrication and Testing/Inspection sections of Facilities Management. The Associate Director of Facilities FM Operations represents the University's interest in such matters with senior administrators, local community officials, faculty and others. The Associate Director of Facilities FM Operations promotes and establishes processes to provide excellence and accountability.
This position provides direct supervision for five Operations Managers, an administrative assistant and a total staff of approximately 80 with membership in BTC, UAW, and Teamsters unions.
The Associate Director of FM Operations works closely with the departments and units within the zone to understand their unit needs and priorities. They manage, in concert with the other established zones, according to the Service Level Agreements mandated through the Facilities Services Governance and Accountability initiative. The Associate Director of FM Operations tracks and manages budgets in conjunction with FM leadership and IPP Finance. The Associate Director of FM Operations receives operational direction from the Associate Vice President of FM as to the best avenues to best serve the mission of the University.

Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience in facilities management to include leading a diverse workforce, or equivalent combination of education and experience in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Technology, or related fields. Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead others. Individual must have an overall understanding of general construction techniques, building system maintenance, business acumen (which includes familiarity with budgets, financial reporting, and forecasting), and developed maturity in decision process and interaction with people in a team environment. Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Experience in a higher education environment including research, teaching, agriculture, athletic, and residential facilities. Experience working with or certification in:
- NYS Fire Code or NFPA 10, 25, or 72
- National Electric Code
- Building Automation standards such as BACSI
- Building Codes including International and NYS Building Code
