The School of Arts and Communication, in the Department of Graphic Design invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term Visiting Assistant Professor position. The anticipated length of this appointment is September 16, 2017-June 15, 2018. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Director.
The Graphic Design Program at Oregon State University prepares students to take an influential role in shaping contemporary graphic design practice. Our philosophy is focused on the 'action of design' — how design transforms, translates and communicates. Our students graduate with the ability to generate and execute ideas/innovations with 'intended actions'. This designed intention centers on effective audience communication and delivery across a multitude of user-interfaces that form a necessary and expected part of living in today's world.
By embracing art, design, technology, and purpose, SAC Graphic Design instills the conviction that art and design can make real change. SAC seeks creative scholars with active, substantial, and substantive exhibition records and/or work experience to inspire this kind of change and build a tradition of excellence.SAC Graphic Design at Oregon State University (OSU) offers a four-year BFA in Graphic Design degree program. SAC Graphic Design students also may take courses in SAC Art (painting, drawing, printmaking, 3D/sculpture, photography, video, art history, and SAC Digital Communication Arts (visualization, animation, 3D modeling) and in the new SAC Entrepreneurship area. Graphic Design students learn in small classes taught by professional faculty. Fairbanks Art Gallery hosts regional and national artist exhibitions. Students regularly interact with guests from the outstanding Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series.
The School of Arts and Communication includes programs in Art, Graphic Design, Music, Digital Communication Arts, Speech Communication, and Theatre. SAC is one of six schools in OSU's College of Liberal Arts. Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
MFA or other terminal degree; or master's in design related field and college-level teaching experience and/or two or more years in design related work experience.
Demonstrated teaching effectiveness with contribution and engagement in the field of contemporary design as a social, aesthetic, and professional discipline.
Demonstrated expertise in typography and one or more of the following areas: interaction design, design thinking, information design, systems design, data visualization, experience design, design theory and social design.
Ability to engage in hybrid practices using various forms of media, technology and materials, or ability to learn hybrid practices.
