The Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) is dedicated to improving the health and independence of people with disabilities and creating a life with opportunities for everyone. As a multi-disciplinary center of excellence, The CDD integrates a broad array of clinical services in one location, including developmental and behavioral pediatrics, nursing, speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy, psychology, social work, education, and audiology, and thus provides an ideal environment for patient care, education and research. At the heart of each team are the patient and family.
CDD is also home for Iowa's LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) program, and has provided outstanding interdisciplinary training in neurodevelopmental disabilities for over two decades.
Provide clinical and managerial leadership in overseeing all aspects of the Center for Disabilities and Development's (CDD) Psychology Department. In addition this position will maintain a clinical caseload. Management responsibilities include managing fiscal resources, serving as liaison with hospital and community partners, leading performance improvement initiatives, participating in the strategic planning process, and supervising staff members and managing staff training, competency and performance. Opportunities available to participate in and/or lead research initiatives and oversee selected graduate and doctoral-level trainees and fellows.
Specific Job Duties and Tasks
Manages daily operations of the CDD Psychology department by providing both department and clinic oversight that may include more than one discipline/function. Duties include:
- Increases and/or maintains staff productivity levels
- Provides for effective operations during staff absences and personnel transition
- Coordinates work and services between departments and assists in the resolution of operation problems
- Assures the quality and effectiveness of provided services; assures services are provided according to established standards through collaboration with Clinical Psychology Director within the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
- Assures department's compliance to UI Healthcare, CDD and departmental policies and procedures
- Investigates and resolves problems encountered by patients, families and other customers.
Provides clinical psychology services in a population with or suspect of a developmental disability:
- Plans for individual patient visits and conducts diagnostic and follow-up evaluation services. Develops appropriate assessments and recommendations consistent with existing professional and organizational standards.
- Develops strategies and recommendations with patient, family and/or caregiver to maximize client's fitness, function and quality of life.
- Provides patient/family education.
- Completes patient report, billing, and other related documentation according to guidelines and within specified timelines; assures this among assigned staff/trainees.
- Performs all duties in a manner that is consistent with service leadership and family-centered care expectations.
Assists ILEND Training Director in overseeing the instruction and supervision of graduate and doctoral-level trainees:
- Assists in recruitment activities for ILEND trainees.
- Assists in systems improvement activities for ILEND.
- Provides mentoring for trainees' activities.
- Provides a structured learning environment for the trainee(s) to acquire entry-level clinical and professional skills.
- Assists students in developing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Provides written and oral feedback regarding performance to student and if appropriate, other therapy staff.
Directs education and training efforts for departmental staff members. Designs and/or implements new areas of training and applies expertise to develop training strategies that impact the field/profession.
Serves as liaison with hospital and community partners.
Directs project management for organization-wide initiatives.
Assures performance excellence from all assigned resources:
- Assures competency of assigned department staff to ensure they provide competent, effective patient care that meets all CDD and UIHC standards as well as expectations from the Clinical Psychology Director within the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
- Completes annual performance evaluations.
- Completes departmental orientation.
- Assesses competency and training needs of department staff.
- Manages department recruitments
Manages department fiscal resources/budget:
- Develops and implements methods to reduce expenses, generate revenue and promote overall fiscal vitality. Work to achieve optimal efficiency and effectiveness of clinical services.
- Manages all assigned financial resources within budget and according to funding source regulations and CDD, UIHC and UI budget policies.
- Sets budget targets, monitoring revenue and expenses and ensures that targets are met.
- Manages financial and productivity data and monitors budgets to meet goals.
- Resolves budget discrepancies.
Leads departmental activities in support of management priorities, strategic plan, and performance improvement initiatives:
- Implements performance improvement initiatives using methods that mirror JCAHO requirements for CDD's clinical areas.
- Develops or supports the development of new clinical and non-clinical programs, including establishing essential partnerships and other synergies that enhance program development success.
- Leads and/or participates in program development and the strategic planning process
Participates in CDD public relations and marketing activities.
Assures compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies:
- Determines compliance with accrediting organizations.
- Prepares assigned staff, processes, space and technology for successful JCAHO review and other assessment and review processes.
- Assures departmental services are in compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies
Ensures a safe, functional, supportive and effective environment for patients and assigned staff/trainees:
- Heads workplace of choice initiatives at the project/department and CDD levels.
- Continually assesses patient and staff safety in the work area.
