Asian Health Services (AHS) was founded in 1974 by a small group of UC Berkeley students, to provide health and health advocacy services for all – regardless of income, insurance status, immigration status, language, or culture. Over three decades, the agency has grown and expanded greatly into an annual budget of $50M and now has seven satellite sites throughout Oakland. AHS’ approach to well-being focuses on “whole patient health,” which besides primary care provides dental and mental health services to more than 27,000 patients in English and over 12 Asian languages: Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Mien, Lao, Mongolian, Karen, Karenni, and Burmese. In these ways, AHS pursues its dual mission of providing quality health care while giving voice to its patients, in order to ensure that it provides culturally and linguistically competent services and programming while serving and advocating for the medically underserved, including the immigrant and refugee Asian community.
Asian Health Services receives support for its clinical and advocacy work from federal, state, and county funds and foundation grants, annual gifts from events, and an occasional lead individual gift to support its capital campaigns. AHS now seeks to bring into the organization a seasoned Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to play a leadership role in designing and implementing a major gifts multi-year development plan, with an ambitious goal of raising five and six-figure gifts and pledges. The Major Gifts Officer will cultivate these supporters to consider further and larger gifts, as well as planned gifts.
Reporting directly to the Director of Program Planning and Development, the Major Gifts Officer will direct all aspects of individual giving including major gifts, planned giving and capital campaigns. This position is Exempt. The MGO will work closely with the CEO and the AHS Board of Directors and the separate AHS Foundation Board of Directors on identifying, cultivating and stewarding individual donors. The Officer will recruit, train and supervise the Events Manager and other development staff and volunteers, as needed.
