Founded in 1965, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is the third largest university in the University of Maine System. UMA has a state-wide mission, serving approximately 4,500 students through its main campus in Augusta located in the state capitol, the Bangor campus, and at eight university college centers, and 32 extension sites. The University offers a wide range of liberal arts and career-focused degree programs at the associate and bachelor degree level, as well as numerous stackable certificates that are delivered through traditional in-seat/ground and online modalities. UMA is highly rated for its online degree programs and for its commitment to serving traditional, as well as adult students, inclusive of veterans and those engaged in active military service. The main campus is located close to the I95 corridor with easy access to coastal and mountain regions, as well as more urban communities to the south.
The University of Maine at Augusta seeks an innovative admissions professional to lead all admission initiatives throughout its distributive campus system. The dean of admission reports directly to the vice president for student engagement and enrollment management (SEEM), and will be an integral member of the SEEM Leadership Team, as well as a member of the Executive Leadership Team of the University. The dean has primary responsibility for developing, articulating, and implementing a dynamic, anticipatory, and thoughtful admission plan that aligns with UMA’s enrollment management plan, the University’s strategic plan, and the University of Maine’s One University initiative. As the leader of the Office of Admission, the dean will shape the internal structure and develop a team currently consisting of 13 staff members focused on strengthening recruitment initiatives, enhancing institutional visibility, increasing yield, and collaborating with institutional research to build an increasingly sophisticated, data-centered yet service-oriented organization.
In collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team and academic deans, the dean of admission works to establish and implement a strategic recruitment plan designed to increase overall enrollment, inclusive of ground, hybrid, and online enrollment serving the needs of pre-college, traditional, and adult student populations. The dean sets goals for admission staff, supports and implements plans to reach desired outcomes, and serves as a liaison to the communities in target regions to develop relationships with key influencers and identify growth opportunities for the University. Further, the dean coordinates with marketing professionals to execute marketing campaigns and optimizes CRM technology to generate targeted, segmented communications across all facets of the admission pipeline. The dean oversees all stages of student recruitment, including but not limited to lead generation and follow up, high school and community college visits, college fairs, name-buys, communication plans, coordination with regional work force/employer representatives, goal setting, on-campus visits and enrollment events, and ensures that all admissions processes are in compliance with UMA/University of Maine System, state, and federal requirements. The successful candidate will collect and analyze data to assess and enhance recruiting efforts and share relevant findings with appropriate institutional leaders and stakeholders. Additionally, the dean represents the University to prospective students and their parents and is an active advocate for building a culture of shared responsibility for student recruitment, retention, and success throughout the campus community.
Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree and track record of progressive post-secondary admission/enrollment services experience, inclusive of demonstrated leadership and supervisory ability. Successful candidates will be familiar with best practice regarding the entire admission process, including recruitment/yield strategies, admission cycle, application processing, and the importance of strategic use of financial aid in shaping overall enrollment. An ability to lead change while managing multiple priorities; exceptional organizational, consultative, interpersonal, marketing, written and oral communications skills; creative problem-solving and innovative strategy formulation skills; demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and direct an admission staff; proven capability in data collection and analysis; and effective planning and decision-making in enrollment services will be important considerations in the selection of the dean of admission.
