UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a UW Medicine Regional Business Affairs Officer.
Under the general guidance of the UW Medicine Strategic Clinical Business Officer and Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs (Associate Vice President), the Regional Business Affairs Officer is primarily responsible for the strategic and operational management and oversight of UW Medicine's external business affairs in support of UW Medicine's mission. UW Medicine's programs include the delivery of advanced medical diagnostics and treatment services, clinical support for the education of medical students and graduate and postgraduate trainees, and maintenance of one of the largest and most advanced university-based basic and clinical research programs in the United States. UW Medicine's programs also include the provision of medical care to under-served and disadvantaged persons and maintaining the economic vitality of UW Medicine's healthcare entities. UW Medicine has a number of external relationships with other healthcare organizations that are necessary to maintain and grow the ability of UW Medicine to achieve its mission to improve the health of the public.
The Regional Business Affairs Officer needs to have depth of expertise and an ability to navigate and work on behalf of the entire UW Medicine system. UW Medicine includes the School of Medicine (SoM), the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Northwest Hospital & Medical Center (NWH), Valley Medical Center (VMC), Airlift Northwest, UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), and the Association of University Physicians d/b/a University of Washington Physicians (UWP). UW Medicine also includes membership in The Association of Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center and University Physicians d/b/a Children's University Medical Group (CUMG), and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). In addition, UW Medicine has numerous clinical affiliations with other entities such as Children's Hospital, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System. The position is intended to develop, execute and steward multiple external relationships. The position will have frequent written and oral interactions with senior executives, including at the Vice President and CEO level, within UW Medicine and UW.
Regional Business Affairs:
Direct and manage local and regional business planning including development of new business programs and affiliations, due diligence activities, and responses to RFPs;
Steward UW Medicine's relationships with external entities;
Direct and manage due diligence activities associated with any new UW Medicine relationship and coordinate and facilitate the business, financial, legal and clinical aspects of such due diligence;
Provide analytic capability, regional market assessments and comprehensive reporting to UW Medicine senior leadership to inform regional strategy;
Direct and manage ad hoc task forces and committees developing new programs between UW Medicine and other organizations/institutions;
With senior leadership, negotiate business arrangements with other healthcare institutions and entities, including affiliations, joint ventures and emerging business models;
Develop and analyze pro formas to support proposed business arrangements;
Advise the Associate Vice President and senior UW Medicine leadership regarding the development of new and renewed contracts and agreements with outside entities;
Structure health care business ventures in compliance with applicable regulations.
Internal Business Affairs:
Responsibility to manage regional business affairs closely with all UW Medicine offices engaged in strategic outreach, financial analysis, market analysis, strategic planning and regional clinical outreach activities to provide integrated recommendations to executive leadership to support the mission of UW Medicine at an enterprise level;
Provide management support of internal business initiatives as a member of the clinical business affairs team.
Master's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related graduate study.
A minimum of 10 years of senior-level experience with academic medical centers, multi-hospital health systems or academic-community partnerships is required. A depth of experience in academic-community clinical partnerships is highly preferred.
Strong business analysis, planning and execution skills.
Substantial knowledge of the healthcare business environment, healthcare operations, quality assurance models, market dynamics, and regulatory environment from both a provider and pay for value perspective.
Ability to analyze pro formas, financial models and financial inputs into organizational decision-making with regard to proposed business relationships.
Effective interpersonal relations skills promoting teamwork and collaborative relationships in a highly matrixed organization.
Excellent organizational and time management abilities with an ability to work effectively and independently in a fast-paced environments.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
