The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accepting applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. The Department has a lengthy history and international recognition for excellence in clinical ophthalmology. The Department has a lengthy history and international recognition for excellence in clinical ophthalmology and ophthalmic research. The Department comprises 26 full-time clinical faculty and 144 volunteer clinical faculty providing ophthalmologic services at 4 major teaching hospitals and 7 community hospitals and satellite facilities. Major departmental sub-specialities include: cornea and external diseases; vitreo-retina; oculoplastics; glaucoma; refractive surgery; pediatric; and neuro-opthalmology. The Department also has 24 full-time research faculty with internationally prominent research programs in ocular infectious diseases, corneal cell biology/physiology, developmental biology of the cornea and retina, glaucoma, strabismus, ocular imaging, the dynamics of visual processing, ocular stem cell biology, and ocular regeneration. In addition to medical school and hospital support (UPMC- University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), the Department has research support from the Eye and Ear Foundation and the Fox Center for Vision Restoration. The Department has an active training program with 17 residents, 7 clinical fellows, 22 postdoctoral trainees & research fellows, and 14 graduate students training in 19 research laboratories. Responsibilities of the Chair include the direction and administration of the professional, educational, research, and outreach programs of the Department of Ophthalmology. Candidates must have a distinguished record in academic ophthalmology, experience in basic and clinical research, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, strong leadership skills, and management experience. The successful candidate will exhibit a firm commitment to the education of residents, fellows and medical and graduate students.
