The Director of Operations and Events provides leadership, development, supervision, and support over the event planning, event production, programming, performance and special events. This includes but is not limited to: supervision of professional and student staff, leadership training and development, event planning, financial management, policy development/interpretations, risk management training, and project coordination. This position will actively work to establish strategic partnerships with departments across campus to strengthen the Norris University Center and the overall Northwestern University experience.
This is a 12-month, exempt position reporting to the Executive Director of the Norris University Center. The primary duties of this position include:
Job Summary Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Norris University Center, the Director is responsible for the overall supervision of daily events in the Norris University Center and its auxiliary sites including event planning, event production and operations, audiovisual support, catering services, programming, and performance and special events. The Director leads Norris Center student employee training and assessment programs. The Director will oversee and implement a departmental customer service program. The position serves as a member of the Norris Center leadership team and directly supervises four assistant directors and indirectly supervises ten full time staff, four graduate assistants, and over 150 student employees
Specific Responsibilities • Leads the planning and implementation of training programs for all full time and student employees throughout the Norris Center. • Directs and manages the student employment assessment program for 150 student staff, including a pre- and post-year learning outcomes assessment, mid-year performance evaluation, and recognition programs. • Coordinates event planning, production, technical services, and catering with the support of professional staff members. • Establishes training expectations for all full-time staff; plans and facilitates annual department retreat for Norris University Center. • Supervises building events, including but not limited to: o Oversight of all event planning and production needs for events in Norris and our satellite locations; o Attendance at events requiring a higher profile of management on site; and o Responding to floor emergency and client complaints or concerns. • Prepares, submits for approval, and manages the annual appropriated and self-supporting budgets for areas of responsibility. • Develops, submits for approval and implements action plans for each area of responsibility which will support the Norris Center Mission and the general goals of the Center as established by the Executive Director, the administrative staff and the Norris Center Advisory Board. • Prepares and monitors all Norris and auxiliary site invoices related to event activity • Develops for approval by the Norris Center Advisory Board, policies and procedures for use of the Norris Center and satellite facilities. • Implements and manages the priority scheduling program. • Works collaboratively with the Catering Director to meet and exceed customer expectations of catering services. • In consultation with the Executive Director, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff within areas of responsibility. • Meets with clients to plan large-scale events for the University including Homecoming, Alumni Events, Development Office Events, President’s Office, Board of Trustees, Admissions, etc. • Prepares annual (and supplemental) report for all department areas as requested regarding building use, unit budgets, policies, etc. • Serves on committee(s) of the Division of Student Affairs. • Performing related duties as required or assigned.
