Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Alumni and External Relations Coordinator develops, coordinates, promotes, maintains and evaluates special alumni relations events and programs. The coordinator supports relations between the department and potential employers of program graduates, including organizing special events that promote interaction between students and potential employers. Activities may be on or off campus, therefore some travel will be required. Works with faculty in support of external visibility and relations, and interfaces with Advancement.
-Develops, coordinates and evaluates alumni relations programs and projects.
-Plans, coordinates, and attends special alumni relations-related events, including recognition banquets, receptions, departmental homecoming events and alumni golf outings.
-Provides stewardship of alumni donors and friends of the department.
-Develops donor recognition programs.
-Works collaboratively with the Department Academic and Career Advisor by participating in recruiting activities for the department.
-Communicates, in a highly professional manner, with department faculty, university administrators, researchers, staff and students and with the many callers and visitors from outside the Virginia Tech community.
-Works with departmental personnel to develop web based articles/news stories related to professional awards received, notable research projects and activity.
-Develops and maintains departmental social media interactions through coordination with Marketing Team lead.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
-Master's degree in communications or related field OR Bachelor’s degree in related field with appropriate experience.
-Demonstrated excellence in writing/editing
-Demonstrated record of professional manner of communication.
-Demonstrated ability to develop, prepare, and deliver effective programs, seminars and workshops relating to Alumni Relations.
-Demonstrated computer skills, particularly related to data management, website maintenance and social media related to posting articles, event notification, and generally maintaining alumni and news sections of the BEAM website.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality
-Excellent organizational skills, creativity, flexibility and self-motivation.
-Accurate attention to detail
-Ability to work effectively with all university constituents
-Experience in Alumni Relations
-Experience using BANNER family of administrative systems.
