The Historical Scientific Instruments Division of the Yale Peabody Museum consists of over 6,000 objects dating from the 1500s to the present. First established by Derek De Solla Price in 1960, the collection continues to grow thanks to private donations and acquisitions from Yale University's academic departments primarily physics, but also astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, and geology.
Reporting to the Curator-in-charge of Historical Scientific Instruments and Director of Collections and Operations, the Collections Manager will be key in making this collection public and accessible for the purposes of teaching and research, preserving the existing instruments and growing the collection. Responsibilities will include the preservation, researching and cataloguing the existing collection, actively working with science departments across the University to acquire instruments, promote knowledge of the collection through traditional and virtual exhibits and educational programs, oversee the collection lending process, write grants directly related to collection improvement, development and digitization and participate in other fundraising activities.

Required Skill/ability 1: Demonstrated experience in collections management and digitization. Knowledge of scientific apparatus and familiarity with the history of science.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Ph.D. in history, history of science, art history or museum studies. MS, or MA in the same fields and at least one year of museum experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
