Binghamton University Health and Counseling Services is seeking a 10 month renewable position for a Treatment Coordinator/Case Manager who will help reduce the impact of mental illness or emotional distress on students' academic and personal pursuits through treatment coordination with campus and community resources. The Treatment Coordinator will help facilitate student access to and utilization of university and/or community resources, particularly clinical treatment resources. Duties are described below, in priority order, with lower priority duties performed as time allows:
Assists in continuity of care for students evaluated and/or admitted to psychiatric hospital or emergency facilities. Coordinates flow of information, mandated assessment timing and scheduling, and non-mandated clinical follow-up appointments for post-hospital care.
Assists students in the off-campus treatment referral process with guidance on issues such as insurance, transportation, selecting a therapist, and knowing what to expect from initial meetings. Advocates for students as appropriate in helping them access services. Assist in analyzing student insurance benefits, financial resources, and support systems as related to their ability to access community resources.
Tracks Students of Concern with mental health issues in terms of their interface with Health and Counseling. Follows up with students as needed to maximize treatment continuity and to leave the door open for students who choose not to continue care.
Communicates with community providers and agencies to expand and maintain referral networks and relationships. Assists in improving internal and external referral processes. Maintains an existing database of referral resources and services in the local community, including low cost providers. Assists in on-campus referral processes as needed and maintains strong relationships with on-campus partners, particularly the Case Management team in the Office of Dean of Students (DOS).
Assists in tracking students referred to the community and communicates with them as needed about continuity of care (whether they completed the referral, quality of care from various providers, etc.). Assists in tracking and communicating with students on the UCC wait list.
May assist in Health Service psychiatric treatment coordination needs such as navigating insurance problems, assisting with therapy referrals that are initiated by psychiatric providers, medication pre-authorizations, and assisting with care needs that emerge from primary healthcare.
May communicate with certain identified high risk or chronic mentally ill students for case management services such as brief check-ins, management of medication and insurance problems, referrals to campus resources, or guidance/advocacy in navigating university systems.
Though the primary role is treatment coordination, this staff member may also assist in providing some clinical or consultation services on an as-needed basis, time permitting.
Master's degree required in a relevant field, with relevant experience in a mental health setting
Demonstrated skill and experience in case management
Organizational and computer skills to effectively maintain a tracking system
Ability to handle a busy caseload in a dynamic environment, and help prioritize and manage multiple clients and situations as part of an interdisciplinary team
Demonstrated competency in crisis consultation or intervention and working with collateral parties within complex systems
Collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, and respect for students and colleagues. Team oriented and "user friendly" for students and campus constituents.
Multicultural awareness, knowledge, responsiveness, and commitment in facilitating treatment for a diverse student population
Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning
Availability and willingness to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities
Strong preference may be given to candidates who are licensed or license eligible (i.e., meeting all criteria for licensure except supervision hours and/or licensing exam; or licensed in another state with clearly comparable licensing requirements).
Interest and experience with developmental and mental health needs of traditional aged college students.
Experience with assessment, triage, and/or crisis intervention in mental health settings.
