The Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) seeks an experienced, innovative Director to lead the Auditorium in presenting and supporting a broad range of high quality cultural, educational, and entertaining performing arts activities that reflect and expand upon the interests of the many diverse audiences in the central Illinois community.
Midway between St. Louis and Chicago, the Auditorium is the only venue of its kind and size in Sangamon County and draws audiences from a 14-county region. More than 75,000 attendees participate in 150+ events annually at the 2000-seat Auditorium and the 350-seat Studio Theatre. Opportunities are available for students of all ages to participate in life-long learning through the arts, including the Class Acts series of daytime performances, which have introduced over 500,000 students in preschool through high school to live performing arts. The Director is responsible for a dozen professional staff, together with student workers, nearly 100 stagehands, and 200+ trained volunteer ushers.
The Auditorium shares the academic mission of the University. An active faculty of practicing artists, musicians, and theatre professionals lead programs that provide students with small class sizes and numerous opportunities to engage the local, regional, and national arts community. They also offer two faculty-directed productions each year featuring a company of student, faculty/staff, and community theatre artists. The Auditorium is performance home for the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Ballet Company, and the UIS Theatre and Music programs.
