| The mission of Cornell's Payroll office is to pay all employees, vendors, and state and federal agencies accurately and on time, while complying with federal, state, and local regulations.|
The Payroll office is responsible for processing all authorized salary and wage payments to Cornell employees. This includes withholding and paying taxes and authorized deductions. Payroll is also responsible for complying with federal, state, and local regulations by submitting tax payments, filing appropriate tax returns, and producing W-2 and 1042S forms.
In addition to meeting these responsibilities, the Payroll office is committed to upholding institutional policies, exercising strong internal controls, and efficiently using university resources.
Provides customer service to students, faculty and staff members relating to the processing of the university payroll. Provides guidance to employees on how to access Workday Employee Self Service so they can complete or change payment election options and update or complete Federal and State tax forms. Processes stop payment requests. Prepares and reviews on demand and manual check requests. Processes requests for reissued W-2's. Maintains liaison with outsourced employment verification vendor to assist with any inquires for additional compensation information. Reviews Check Master output files to checks received. Additional duties include but are not limited to: distributing payroll deduction registers and vendor payments, providing garnishment support in absence of the primary garnishment processor, reviewing and distributing incoming mail. Researches and resolves payroll and time collection inquiries reported through the main payroll support line, customer walk-in's and email requests.
As needed, assists Foreign Nationals and Non-Resident Aliens with taxation questions and completion of the Foreign National Questionnaire. Reviews VISA documentation and provides instruction on proper completion of required tax forms.

Related payroll experience of 1-2 years, 2 years of college coursework, or Associates with 2-4 years' experience or equivalent combination in business office, customer service, or banking environment. Requires ability to maintain strict confidentiality, set priorities, meet deadlines, & work effectively under pressure. Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal & communication skills. Position requires initiative and ability to work in a complex, fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent customer service skills required. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to apply logic, sound judgment and decision making skills to interpret a variety of situations including when to escalate issues for resolution. Demonstrated ability to learn new systems quickly. Must be flexible and highly adaptable to shifting priorities, new situations and technologies. Requires experience with standard office productivity tools (Microsoft Office Suite and electronic mail systems). Knowledge of Workday is preferred, other large HCM experience is acceptable.
Experience with Workday preferred or other large scale HRMS applications such as PeopleSoft, Oracle or ADP desired. Knowledge of union payrolls as well as Kronos experience helpful.
