Position is located at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva, New York.
As a member of the Buildings and Properties Unit, under the general direction of the Director of Facilities (DOF), provide technical oversight of the day to day operations of the NYSAES physical plant. Plan department staffing levels, prioritize and implement maintenance programs for the campus infrastructure. Provide leadership and supervision of staff within the skilled trades shops (carpenter, mechanical, electrical, etc.) and fleet garage. Direct, plan and schedule work with skilled trades' leads. Provide technical expertise and oversight of all work conducted by in-house skilled trades. Establish work practices in concert with university policy and unit guidelines. Develop technical training plans to ensure staff proficiency. Provide for construction, installation, repairs and preventative, routine and planned maintenance of facilities. Must be available for 24 hour on-call status for campus emergencies. Support technical operation and ensure reliability of the 24 hour/7 day per week Central Heating Plant operations. Conduct analysis-evaluating options and make recommendations to the DOF related to capital renewal. Ensure and execute safety and environmental compliance in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and University policies. Monitor budgets; oversee the procurement of supplies for inventory and scheduled jobs. Assist with long-range planning. Identify needs for capital projects, conduct analysis of options, make recommendations on course of actions to the DOF, and support the development of plans for funding requests and implementation.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in appropriate field of study. Minimum of 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Understanding of OSHA policies and ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents. Working knowledge of technical trades, fleet services and utility plant operations. Proven evidence of successful experience in a leadership and supervisory role, with strong commitment to teamwork. Will be required to take Cornell University Supervisory Training within first six months of employment. Demonstrated ability to cope with stress while solving multiple problems and tasks. Sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with direct reports, peers, clients and service providers inside and outside the organization. Ability to handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner. Experience with computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, environmental controls, email and web browsers. Must be extremely organized and have the ability to manage multiple tasks with priorities that are often in conflict. Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, communicate, listen, respect others, set priorities and achieve them, and use time efficiently and effectively. Must be highly motivated and exhibit innovation, creativity, good judgment and reliability in the work place. Proven ability to promote teamwork with staff to resolve issues and achieve common goals. Proven success in providing and promoting service to internal and external customers. Demonstrated ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated effective listening skills. Must show initiative, anticipate needs and take appropriate action. Ability to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands. Ability to meet the demands of a 24/7 operation and work non-standard hours, weekends, and holidays as needed. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must possess and maintain valid New York State driver license and successfully undergo driver and full background check.
Preferred Qualifications: 5 years of proven successful supervisory experience.
