The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 15 tenured or tenure-track primary faculty members and over 20 affiliated faculty, with research strengths in injury biomechanics, biomaterials/tissue engineering, biomedical imaging, bioinstrumentation, and systems biology. Research productivity is high, with total external funding exceeding $3 million (2014), and faculty recognition including an NAE member and three SAE fellows. The department has approximately 40 Ph.D. students, 90 Master’s students, and 90 undergraduate students. Wayne State University is a Carnegie Research Extensive University, with approximately $245 million in annual research expenditures, and nearly 28,000 students, including 7,000 graduate and professional students.
