The Development Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts, both current and deferred, to University of Minnesota Extension, including Minnesota 4-H. This position complements the development efforts of the Chief Development Officer in Extension, as well as others on the Extension Development team, and reports to the Chief Development Officer, Extension.
The Development Officer will work with alumni, friends, donors, stakeholders, corporations and foundations to determine their philanthropic interests, and solicit and close appropriate gifts in support of the fundraising priorities.
Major Gift Fundraising-85%
Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of Extension, the development plans and strategies that pertain to Extension’s vision and philanthropic priorities.
Working with the Chief Development Officer, develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics.
Initiate and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives.
Manage special projects, meetings, and lead team activities, on behalf of the management, as appropriate.
Work with the broader University development teams by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and other Foundation staff on donor strategies. Work with University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) development research to continue to identify new potential major gift prospects for future gift opportunities.
Create and implement cultivation structures that include prospect strategy development, preparation of written materials, design and implementation of cultivation events, direct solicitation, and solicitation in tandem with volunteers and other staff.
Independently strategize and present current, endowment, and future gift opportunities to prospective donors to increase private funding available for program participant scholarships, 4-H student scholarships, research projects, outreach and extension initiatives, and other restricted and unrestricted needs.
Attend Extension, UMF events, and external functions as recommended.
Clears and coordinates prospective donors through the University of Minnesota Foundation’s procedures to ensure effective contact/solicitation of the donors which maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution.
Partners and collaborates with the University of Minnesota Foundation’s services, as necessary
