The adviser for Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCDB) is responsible for undergraduate outreach, orientation, and academic advising for the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology Department in the Physical and Biological Sciences Division (PBSci). Undergraduate degrees administered by this department include:
Biology B.S. Human Biology B.S. Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology B.S. Neuroscience B.S. Biology minor
The undergraduate adviser provides academic major and minor advising and services for all registered UC Santa Cruz undergraduate students in Physical and Biological Sciences throughout their tenure at our university, though most of the services focus on student success in physical and biological science majors once a student is proposed or declared.
The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences provides general science education for all UCSC undergraduates, educates undergraduate science and engineering majors, and maintains research and graduate programs of national and international stature. The division is comprised of departments and programs of study, organized research units, instructional and research programs to attract and retain a diverse population of students, and a variety of support programs and facilities. Physical and Biological Sciences' annual state budget is approximately $30 million with $57 million of extramural research funding.
Ability to work independently, as well as with a team.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and parents of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain a high level of professionalism in all circumstances, work effectively in a team situation, and make presentations to small and large audiences.
Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion when handling confidential situations or materials.
Computer skills sufficient for preparation and management of a large volume of email, shared documents, databases, spreadsheets, and presentations using standard office programs (MS Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro database, etc.) and ability to learn new systems.
