The strategic alliances specialist will build a collaborative program of applied research between university faculty, and corporate and government sponsors. This position will develop and conduct their own applied research and technical assistance projects in collaboration with other faculty in the office. This position, reporting to the director of the office, is a restricted calendar year, administrative and professional faculty appointment.
Responsibilities include: Working both independently and in support of the Director of Economic Development for Virginia Tech, to develop and implement a comprehensive work plan to promote Virginia Tech's interests and capabilities to the business and government communities in the Hampton Roads region. This will include but not be limited to:
- Being part of a team that assists companies and federal agencies to access and work with Virginia Tech's assets in the Hampton Roads region and Blacksburg;
- Developing relationships with the economic development organizations within Hampton Roads, to support the health and growth of the region's business community;
- Promoting the new Tech Center in Newport News and the university's Commonwealth Campus Center;
- Facilitating opportunities for Virginia Tech students to participate in internships with Hampton Roads corporate partners and federal agencies.
This position will also be responsible for designing and implementing projects which address economic and community development needs across Greater Hampton Roads. This requires the specialist to undertake the following:Write and submit sponsored project proposals, including scope of work, budget development, and secure funding from national, state, and local sources to support a portion of salary and fringe for this position.
The Strategic Alliance Specialist will also develop contacts with current and potential clients across the public, private, and non-profit sectors through regular travel around the region, active participation in professional associations, and other marketing activities of the unit
Experience with applied research or technical assistance projects in a collaborative corporate, university or government setting
Experience with research and practice grounded in economic development concepts and their application
Possess exemplary communication and analytical skills
Program/project experience that demonstrates creativity, organization, and entrepreneurial spirit
Advanced degree in business, planning, public administration, economics or a related field
Possess experience with securing funding or contracts from external partners
Demonstrate the ability to build collaborative teams across organizations
Familiarity with the business and government in Hampton Roads or the assets of Virginia Tech
