Brown University, an elite institution of higher education renowned for the rigor and innovation of its curriculum as well as the excellence of its research, seeks an exceptional and experienced professional to serve as Executive Director of Corporate Relations.
A committee, chaired by Provost Richard M. Locke, has been formed to undertake an extensive search to identify the inaugural Executive Director, with a goal of having a candidate in place by July 1, 2017.
Located in historic Providence, Rhode Island, and founded in 1764, Brown University is the seventh-oldest college in the United States. Brown is an independent, coeducational Ivy League institution comprising undergraduate and graduate programs, along with the Warren Alpert Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Engineering, and School of Professional Studies.
Under the leadership of President Christina H. Paxson and Provost Richard M. Locke, Brown has adopted a strategic plan, Building on Distinction, which positions the University to attain higher levels of academic excellence over the next decade through collaborative integrative research and an innovative approach to education. In fall 2015, the University launched a $3 billion comprehensive campaign, BrownTogether, to support and achieve the aspirations outlined in Building on Distinction. Executive Director for Corporate Relations
The ED is the most senior officer in the University dedicated to growing and cultivating a robust and holistic corporate and industry relations portfolio to advance opportunities for funding, research, technology transfer, executive education, teaching and student internships and employment.
Reporting to the Vice President for Research, and with significant interaction with the Provost, the Executive Director (ED) is charged with developing and implementing a strategic plan to identify, cultivate, coordinate, solicit and steward corporate partners in support of the Universityâ??s mission and, more specifically, the priorities of Building on Distinction. ED will also be responsible for developing metrics to measure progress toward the goals enumerated in the strategic plan.
- Determine the infrastructure needed to establish the Universityâ??s Office of Corporation Relations.
- Convene and staff an advisory board consisting of businesses leaders to advise Brown on its development and coordinated efforts with the commercial sector.
- Establish a diverse set of initiatives to convey to industry the innovative activities ongoing at Brown.
- Provide tangible avenues to forge meaningful and productive connections with industry.
ED will also engage with colleagues across the University to identify unique resources and capabilities to be maximized through new or broadened partnerships, and to develop a coordinated structure to ensure ongoing effective communication, cooperation and responsiveness between groups. This will include, but not limited to, working closely with individual researchers, the Technology Ventures Office, Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Professional Studies, Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), the Computer Science Department, and Offices of Advancement and Government Relations.
Ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant field and a demonstrated record of leadership with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience. Understanding of both corporate cultures/organizations and complex institutions of higher education is required.
