The School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at the Newark Campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, seeks candidates for a tenure or tenure-track faculty position to begin in fall 2017. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: public administration, nonprofit management, local government, urban affairs and policy, community development, public-private partnerships, privatization, and performance measurement and management. We seek applications from highly productive researchers with an exemplary record of scholarly publications as well as evidence of commitment to publicly engaged scholarship relevant to diverse, urban communities. The ideal candidate could have an affiliated appointment in another unit at Rutgers if the experience is commensurate with such an appointment. Successful candidates should be able to teach courses in our BA program in public and nonprofit administration, our MPA program (both on campus and online), and our PhD program. Experience with, or interest in, teaching students with diverse cultural backgrounds is also important.
The appointee will become a core faculty member in a NASPAA-accredited public administration program that is ranked 13th nationally in Public Management/Administration by US News and World Report and holds four other top-20 rankings in Public Affairs and Administration. Rutgers SPAA is the first U.S. school to earn full international accreditation from The International Commission on Accreditation of Public Administration Education and Training Programs (ICAPA). The accreditation covers Rutgers SPAA's PhD, MPA, and certificate programs.
As a major public university in New Jersey’s largest city, located just a few miles from New York City, the Newark Campus of Rutgers provides students with the knowledge and preparation necessary for leadership roles in an increasingly complex society, with particular attention to its public mission as an anchor institution. The campus has consistently been ranked as one of the most diverse national universities in the United States. Rutgers-Newark is also ranked twelfth in prominence among doctoral degree-granting small universities in the country. SPAA actively engages with the nonprofit and government communities in the greater Newark metro area. The School offers an undergraduate major in public and nonprofit administration, an on-campus MPA, a fully online MPA, an Executive MPA, and a research-oriented Ph.D. Faculty are also involved in several certificate programs. Total enrollment is more than 1000 degree and non-degree students. Teaching, published research, and community engagement are each important to the School.
Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in public affairs and administration or a related field at the time of appointment. Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2017, and will continue until outstanding candidates are found. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, protected veteran status or any other classification protected by law. Members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Diversity and inclusion are a key foundational element of Rutgers University's Strategic Plan. In the goal to enhance faculty diversity, Rutgers defines diversity very broadly. Diversity may include, but is not limited to, gender, ethnicity, race, culture, national origin, or other personal or professional characteristics that are either unrepresented or underrepresented in the particular department or unit of intended hire.
