The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci) comprises six comprehensive departments offering a full range of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics); three smaller departments offering graduate degrees in interdisciplinary fields (Astronomy & Astrophysics, Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, and Ocean Sciences); and one small graduate professional program (Science Communication). It is the principal home of three major organized research units (the Institute of Marine Sciences, the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, and the University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory) as well as a number of smaller research centers.
Physical and Biological Sciences' annual state budget is approximately $37 million with another $60 million of extramural research funding from over 100 different funding agencies, currently supporting 220 faculty, lecturers and adjuncts, 500 academic student employees, 320 researchers/specialists, 250 undergraduate student employees, 250 staff, 175 courtesy appointments, and 200 volunteer appointments. The division oversees planning, construction, renovation, and relocation activities for a total of approximately 595,000 asf in eight major science buildings and over 23 auxiliary facilities. Construction for one new major science building is underway. This project will add roughly 40,000 asf to the division's existing research space.
In 2015-16, the PBSci Division represented 27.3% of the campus undergraduate course enrollments, 25.4% of the undergraduate proposed and declared majors, and 24.2% of bachelors degrees conferred.
Under general direction of the Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences, the three Assistant Deans positions are:

Assistant Dean for Planning and Personnel
All three positions serve as principal staff officers for academic and administrative affairs, advising the dean, acting in his/her absence, and serving as both on- and off-campus liaisons. As the dean's direct management team, they share responsibility for strategic and academic planning, development, and liaison. Each assistant dean has primary responsibility for specific areas of divisional operations and programs while retaining familiarity with all areas of administration.
The Assistant Dean for Planning, Finance and Operations has three direct reports and roughly 25 indirect reports.
Advanced degree in a relevant field of management or science; University of California experience; or equivalent combination of education, knowledge and UC experience sufficient to successfully perform responsibilities; experience in an instructional and research environment highly desirable.
An understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education with experience and background sufficient to conceptualize, communicate, and implement the mission and goals of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences.
Excellent analytical, planning, management and organizational skills and related experience to creatively address instructional, research and administrative issues, to effectively define and implement strategic plans and goals, and to complete critical projects and tasks in a timely manner. Extensive experience using problem solving skills.
Demonstrated leadership and skills to manage and motivate a diverse administrative, professional and technical staff, fostering teamwork and formulating and instituting reporting structures and processes to achieve maximum functionality and efficiency.
Flexibility and the ability to lead staff and other teams successfully through organizational change and crisis.
