Under the general direction of the administrative manager and graduate director, the incumbent independently manages all aspects of the Environmental Studies Department's graduate program serving as its primary advisor, resource person, and liaison. The primary functional areas of this position include: (1) student advising; (2) program planning, coordination, and administration; (3) temporary academic personnel support; (4) recruitment and admissions; and (5) financial management & student employment.
The Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS), an interdisciplinary program within the Social Sciences Division, is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and a variety of support programs and facilities with staff committed to providing excellent service to students, faculty and researchers. With an annual budget of nearly $4 million dollars, the department consists of approximately 50 graduate students and 22 permanent faculty including four endowed chairships who teach and do research in both the social and natural sciences. This research is frequently supported by funding from granting agencies and provides employment opportunities for numerous graduate student researchers (GSR) and postdoctoral scholars. We have 4 adjunct professors and 42 affiliated faculty. We average 14 lecturers, 15 administrative and support staff, and 6 researchers (including multiple visiting foreign scholars) on an annual basis. In addition to the Ph.D. degree and designated emphases in several disciplines, the department offers a BA and combined majors with biology, earth sciences, and economics, along with a concentration in Agroecology. We also have a robust internship program (667 completed in 2014-15), and field study opportunities (593 students enrolled in field study courses in 2014-15). There are approximately 685 proposed and declared majors in the undergraduate program.
Sub-units within the department are the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) and the Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History (NCNH). We are also closely affiliated with the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) and the Everett Center. Gifts to the NCNH & CASFS alone totaled $6 million in 2013-14. The facilities are housed in two adjoining buildings: the Interdisciplinary Sciences Building (ISB), and Natural Sciences 2 (NS2), and include five rooftop greenhouses. The 102 rooms house over 106 individuals and include two classrooms, three science teaching labs, five seminar/project rooms, three computing labs, 10 natural science faculty research labs consisting of 19 rooms, nine social science faculty with five research labs, mail and copy room, administrative, faculty, researcher and graduate student offices. The department is affiliated with Ecology & Evolutionary Biology faculty on coastal and restorative ecological research and instructional initiatives, and works closely with staff and projects conducted with the UC Natural Reserve System whose offices are in space assigned to our department.
Experience within a university or equivalent organization.
Experience advising and counseling in an academic setting.
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills sufficient to disseminate information in a clear, accurate and effective manner.
Strong budgeting, financial accounting, or payroll skills and experience.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
