The Department of Dermatology is seeking a Medical Education Specialist. This position will play a key role in managing all areas of education within the department, including: resident education, medical student education, and faculty education.
Partner with the Residency Program Director to develop and execute high-quality, innovative, proficiency-based curricula to support the ACGME and institutional requirements. Serve as department expert on all residency-related educational matters, assisting the Program Director in the application of policies and procedures. Develop and implement methods of competency and program assessment, utilizing technology to aide in these efforts. Develop methods to instruct faculty on how to provide high quality, timely feedback and instruction. Assist in the development of education informatics and educational tools. Assist faculty with preparation of lectures.
Coordinate and complete the UMHS Internal Review and ACGME Site Visit documentation. Serve as the primary contact for all communication with the UM Office of Graduate Medical Education. Coordinate off-site contract development and management (i.e., with the VA Hospital). Assist with the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) milestone development and implementation with an emphasis on streamlining analysis and facilitating reporting. Support the Department Statistician by gathering and timely reporting data for the CCC. Oversee changes to the educational portion of the departmental website. Lead efforts in the annual resident recruitment process and oversee major program events such as Resident Interviews and the annual arrival of new residents. Supervise the Senior Administrative Assistant to address all transactional work related to resident education. Assure compliance with UM policies and procedures, as well as all ACGME policies and procedures. Oversee the budget (FTE reports and program expenses); ensure that financial transactions are consistent with UM requirements/regulations. Participate in meetings related to graduate medical education.
Medical Student Education
This position will play a key role in shaping the new curriculum redesign with high-level, substantive contribution to content development; including: working with faculty to enhance interactive teaching and integration with other disciplines, and assisting with the creation and analysis of student assessments and teaching evaluations. Provide high-level assistance to the Director of the Scientific Trunk/M1 in Dermatology, and the Director of the Branches/M3-M4 in Dermatology to design and implement the new curriculum as part of the larger UM Medical School curriculum transformation. Apply individual expertise in the areas of educational pedagogy, learning theory, and technology to help build an engaging, interactive curriculum, utilizing innovative technology. Oversee annual Dermatology Sequence in the Scientific Trunk, including Dermatology in Doctoring. Oversee all medical student rotations in the Branches, including visiting student coordination. Work with the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion and Global Outreach. Participate in meetings related to undergraduate medical education.
Serve as departmental expert on Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in Dermatology including: Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, Self-Assessment (SA) requirements and Quality Improvement (QI) requirements. Implement and monitor programs to facilitate the satisfaction of MOC requirements, and manage CME processes. Support the Service Chief and ACU Medical Directors as needed to maintain compliance in MOC. This position will also be expected to work with the Office of Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development to provide faculty development opportunities, including learning theory and application. Additionally, this position will mentor faculty in the development of teaching skills, learning theory and application, etc.
Other Areas of Education
As the departmental Education Specialist this position will also be involved in managing arising educational needs. This may include projects such as collaborating with stake holders to formulate and implement training programs for Advanced Practice Professionals.

Bachelor’s Degree. Experience with educational pedagogy and application. Proven ability to problem-solve, coordinate multiple competing deadlines, and to deliver work in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner, working without direct supervision. Proven ability to take initiative and assume accountability for processes. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. The ability to work with faculty, residents, students, and staff at all levels. Proven ability to assess and handle highly confidential matters required. Facile with new technologies, or a demonstrated interest/willingness to learn new technologies. Proficient at Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree, and 1+ years’ progressively responsible experience (can be volunteer or as part of a school group). Experience not only with education, but with medical education in particular is desired; some prior familiarity with basic science and/or the field of medicine, or interest in learning about these areas. Familiarity with UM policies and procedures. Familiarity with ACGME policies and procedures. Familiarity with MOC (CME, SA, QI). Familiarity with MedHub, ERAS, Wolverine Access, Amadeus, Canvas, VSAS, Clingrade.
Salary and title will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
