Office of Research Information Services (ORIS), a division of the Office of Research, coordinates, develops, and supports electronic research administration for faculty and staff at the University of Washington. Goals include:
Improve service to Principal Investigators (PIs) and research and administrative staff, enhance their ability to obtain funding, reduce their workload, and streamline the processing of their proposals.
Provide authorized individuals with convenient access to timely information on the status of proposals and awards.
Increase the efficiency of the research community to meet growing workload and compliance demands with limited resources.

The University of Washington's Office of Research Information Services has an outstanding opportunity for a full time User Experience Lead.
The Office of Research Information Services manages a large number of websites and web applications that serve the UW Research community.
Our User Experience Lead is responsible for leading the programmatic components of the User Experience strategy, which guides the execution of all ORIS software product design. This role leads the user experience team that is the voice of the user and works with product owners, business analysts & technical resources to blend business goals, product roadmaps, and user goals to ensure successful outcomes. This role is crucial to our product discovery needs and contributes to shaping the product pipeline. In this capacity the role is to bring simplicity to an institution with a world-leading complex research enterprise.
Must synthesize a large body of information and data related to research administration processes, procedures, policies, guidelines, forms, topics, and concepts into design recommendations and working prototypes.
Select appropriate mechanisms, methods and systems for gathering user feedback and to provide clear product visioning and make recommendations for setting or changing the visual design and functionality, information architecture, and related elements on Office of Research related websites or applications.
Manage competing priorities and requests from various stakeholders and product managers, always thinking strategically about the work requested, the challenges presented through the user research, and ensure product vision and roadmap reflect the best way forward.
Evangelize a user-centered design approach for all ORIS software and web products.
Champion the role of User Experience with various technical and non-technical stakeholders across all levels of the University.
Manage a team of individuals with diverse skill sets and functional roles.
The University of Washington receives more federal research funding than any other American public university. Last year, over 5,000 proposals totaling over a billion dollars were funded. Working with others from the Office of Research Information Services, this position will ensure websites and systems are meeting the needs of researchers and their staff.
User Interface Design
Be a positive, engaging force for UX within the organization and proactively find opportunities to improve the research experience at UW.
Develop a multi-device user experience strategy that provides strategic design thinking for shaping product roadmaps and influencing backlog prioritization.
Conceptualize and document proposed design solutions through deliverables such as personas, use cases, scenarios, wireframes, site maps, and workflow diagrams.
Collaboratively define concept and vision for ORIS products and services by applying user-centered design methodologies and rapid prototyping skills in an agile environment.
Create prototypes at varying levels of fidelity for requirements gathering, product concept validation, project planning and feature testing.
Build, manage and synthesize multiple channels of feedback including analytics, usability results, interview data, survey data, while being an advocate for the design process.
Ensure design patterns, user interface elements and layouts are accessible & usable while managing the constraints of the various platforms ORIS works within.
Conduct formal and informal usability tests at all stages in the project lifecycle; report results to internal team and business partners, and provide recommendations for enhancements and future product vision.
Keep informed on the latest and greatest in human centered design practices, techniques, and tools to ensure forward approaches are integrated into processes and standards.
User Experience Strategy & Standards Leadership
Define and lead UX practices and processes and work with program, project, and product managers to integrate these processes into the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Manage the creation of UX deliverables including conducting user interviews, usability studies, competitive analyses, technical feasibility assessments, proof of concept processes, wire frames, user journeys, use cases, user scenarios, functional specifications and functional prototypes.
Lead and participate in developing and executing the UX strategic direction.
Engage with product owners and managers to develop product design visions and iteration plans.
Advocate for user experience best practices & ORIS design vision with business partners, UW enterprise departments.
Work closely with Front-End Engineering Lead to build a strong relationship between UX Team and Front-End Engineering Team that promotes a holistic view of user experience and enables team members to work effectively across functional lines.
Manage and mentor UX team members, and guide their efforts to maintain alignment with organizational, team and UW goals.
Front-End and Software Engineering
Collaborate with ORIS developers to bridge the gap between prototypes, design needs, product development and operations.
Promote best practices to UX team members in front-end engineering as related to design and prototyping.
Bachelor's Degree in Informatics, Human Centered Design, Cognitive Psychology, Visual Communications and Design, Computer Science or similar field
4-5 years experience with all facets of the user experience discipline
Experience leading UX teams
UX planning at a strategic level; ability to direct workforce requirements, organizational practices, and vision across products
Ability to balance execution (unblocking efforts) with diplomacy (fostering collaboration)
Experience recruiting passionate individuals with strong communication skills
Proficient in a variety of methods to convey ideas and concepts (e.g. wireframes, prototypes, etc.)
Effective communicator, presenter, and negotiator
Strong creative and organizational vision for information and product design
Creative problem-solver with the ability to work with a blank slate and inspire others
Knowledge of web-based technologies and their impact on the feasibility of design solutions
Understand and use web analytics data, as well as user data from other departments & systems in the organization
Knowledge of accessibility guidelines and best practices as they related to user interface design
Ability to design prototypes in Axure, Photoshop, Illustrator, or Omnigraffle
Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical staff to determine and confirm requirements and appropriate solutions
Strong portfolio available for viewing
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Experience working in research administration, especially related to higher education
Knowledge of lean/agile software development practices including kanban and scrum
Knowledge of resource & service oriented architectures, RESTful web services and data formats such as JSON and XML and how to prototype working solutions with them
Knowledge of modern front-engineering building blocks such as HTML5, CSS3, Node.js, Angular.js, Foundation, Bootstrap
