STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Director of Systems and Infrastructure Operations for Information Technology, maintains, upgrades, and installs Microsoft Windows operating systems, application software, security, and monitoring utilities on all IT development, test, and production servers. Works closely with network engineers, application developers, and database administrators to ensure optimal performance of the underlying server operating system, local and SAN-based storage, and application load balancer configurations. Operates and monitors data storage devices including disk arrays, tape libraries, and SAN hardware and software infrastructure as they pertain to systems operation. Analyzes performance, stability, and security measures of server operating system and IT-managed applications and makes recommendations for hardware and software upgrades. Performs related duties as assigned, necessary, or requested by management.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs the installation, testing, maintenance and upgrading of systems software and hardware on various computing platforms, according to standards set by IT management, to insure the compatibility, effectiveness, security and integrity of all systems and services.
Working with application administrators and/or designated vendor support personnel, assists in the installation and updating of client/server applications on both the server and clients as necessary to ensure proper communication, functionality, and security.
Facilitates and monitors secure remote access to server systems as required by vendor support agreements. Create and maintain system documentation.
Configures local account profiles, passwords, OS firewall, group policies, and other network security settings on Windows database, web, application, and general-purpose computing servers.
Manages OS-level clustering configuration and maintenance where applicable.
Coordinates with Storage Administrator to develop and test effective backup and data retention policies and procedures for all Windows servers and application data repositories.
Coordinates and/or performs the installation of applications in a Citrix, XenApp or Terminal Services environment in support of client server software. Manages access and permissions for users of Citrix hosted applications as necessary.
Facilitates and manages secure system integration points in support of authorized data exchanges between application environments as necessary.
Develops scripts and command procedures to enhance the functionality and manageability of supported systems.
Evaluates server and application operations and performance as required; develops and implements procedures to improve performance and meet required objectives.
Maintains integrity and appropriate confidentiality in institutional and program operations. Contributes to the preparation of studies and reports containing findings and recommendations for the implementation of systems, security and application software.
Acts as liaison with external vendors to ensure that new and existing hardware and software installations meet the needs of the unit as well as conform to all IT computing standards.
Establishes and maintains effective communication and cooperative working relationships with University administrators, faculty and staff, government and private agencies in order to accomplish the mutual objectives of both Student Development and Campus Life and the Information Technology Division.
Develops appropriate communication with user community to insure transfer of operational, procedural, and policy information.
Works with the project managers and internal clients to verify the business and system requirements, which generate the need for changes in the information technology infrastructure.
Consults with supervisor concerning problems/obstacles, task prioritization, and policy matters. Offers suggestions for improvement as appropriate.
Attends and participates in meetings or university events related to assigned responsibilities.
Maintains system and network logs as necessary to identify potential security threats or attacks/probes on systems.
Evaluates and recommends hardware and/or software to meet current and future needs on all supported campus platforn1s.
Identifies and enforces open systems standards where applicable.
Compiles and analyzes systems and networks data as required to assist in capacity planning so computing and networking resources can be utilized to their full potential.
Represents the university at conferences, seminars or meetings, and serves on ad hoc and standing committees as required.
Participates in the development of policy, and in short and long range planning.
