The Department of Forest Resources at the University of Minnesota invites applications for the position of Professor and Department Head. The Head will serve as the chief administrative officer of the department, reporting to the Dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, and will represent the Department at all levels of the University administration. In addition the Head represents the Department in our collaboration with many stakeholders and partners, such as forest-based industry; natural resource management agencies; tribal, federal, state, and local governments; and non-profit organizations. The Head will provide leadership in teaching, research, outreach, engagement, international activities, and cooperative departmental programs. The Head has administrative responsibility for faculty, civil service, graduate student, postdoctoral and hourly employees of the Department and actively supports and challenges staff to excel in their respective positions. The Head will encourage open communication, cooperation, and interchange among departmental personnel and others in the discharge of their varied responsibilities.
? Leads in establishment of department priorities, goals and areas of emphasis including those involving cross-disciplinary activities or inter-departmental programs; ascertains how well department goals are being met; facilitates periodic formal review of department programs; fosters effective working relationships among faculty and staff, as well as stakeholders, to accomplish departmental goals.
? Actively supports securing adequate resources for the Department to strengthen and broaden its mission
? Participates in the development of collegiate policy and collegiate strategic planning and supports these activities within the Department.
? Promotes excellence of graduate and undergraduate programs, such as through resource allocation, curricular review, and governance; provides leadership in growing enrollment and retention, improving the student experience, and recruiting a diverse student body in both graduate and undergraduate programs.
? Promotes effective, regular, and pro-active outreach and engagement with external stakeholders
? Responsible for departmental human resource management, including recruitment, professional development, mentoring, and retention of faculty and staff.
? Promotes and practices principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity. Fosters an inclusive, diverse, and culturally-rich academic environment.
? Conducts faculty and staff performance evaluations; directs departmental faculty promotion and tenure process; determines faculty salaries and faculty and staff workloads (with College Dean).
? Directs preparation and monitoring of department budgets and records; allocates and manages department funds and resources including personnel, space, and equipment.
? Plans and conducts faculty/staff meetings; initiates nominations of department personnel for internal and external awards; coordinates all department committee assignments and activities.

Nature of Appointment:
Academic and administrative appointment will be on a twelve-month basis as Head and tenured faculty position as full professor. The initial administrative appointment is for three years with subsequent annual reappointment dependent on performance and outcome of administrative reviews conducted every three years. Salary is commensurate with experience and achievement, and carries an administrative salary augmentation. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
