The Associate/Director for Development plays a critical role in Santa Clara University's efforts to secure resources for its strategic funding priorities and deepen its relationships with alumni, parents and friends of the University's Jesuit School of Theology (JST). In furtherance of the University's integrated strategic plan, the director designs and implements strategies for increased engagement with current and prospective annual and major donors in support of the JST and the University. The director creates and executes donor cultivation plans to leverage this historic time for Santa Clara and achieve the goals of an ambitious campaign plan.
The level of the director for development will depend on the experience of the individual selected and specific goals will be assigned based on the agreed upon level. This position will report to the Executive Director for Major Gifts with a dotted-line report to the Dean of the Jesuit School of Theology. The Associate/Director will work both in Berkeley and Santa Clara.
In building and managing a portfolio of special and major gift prospects, he or she will lead the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects targeted for five and six-figure gifts. He or she will work closely with senior JST and University administrators to identify funding opportunities and develop prospect-to-donor strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop, lead and execute solicitations to secure annual and major gifts in the five and six-figure range for the University.
2. Secure and conduct personal face-to-face visits monthly to qualify, engage, solicit and steward the Universitys major and annual donors and prospects.
3. Lead the qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of 150 high net worth prospects ensuring that each receive regular and strategic contact. Meet dollar and activity metrics set with Executive Director for Major Gifts.
4. Lead the development of engagement and solicitation strategies for qualified special and major gift prospects, oversee the implementation and personally drive the execution of said strategies.
5. Help prepare the dean and/or University administrators by outlining fundraising strategies for donor meetings and events with written briefings as they pertain to key prospects.
6. Produce well written, accurate and timely follow-up and related correspondence such as comprehensive proposals, related budgets, contact reports, cover and thank you letters, e-mails, reports, and briefings in support of cultivating, soliciting and stewarding assigned prospects.
7. Track and record activities as they relate to assigned prospects using Black Bauds constituent management software (CLARA) and report regularly to Executive Director for Development.
8. Coordinate the annual fund activities of JST, including the generation of the text of the semi-annual appeal letters.
9. Develop and write grant proposals up to $100,000 for Annual Fund and Campaign support. Collaborate with University Relations Corporate & Foundation Relations department on proposals over $100,000.
10. Work closely with SCU University Relations, GTU consortial partners, and other institutions to coordinate, plan, and oversee events designed to build relationships with alumni, supporters, donors and friends of JST. This includes our signature regional events, Theology in the City.
11. Participate as an active member of the JST and Office of Development staffs, sharing information and collaborating with colleagues in a respectful and professional manner; contributing to a healthy and positive work environment.
12. Other duties as assigned.GENERAL GUIDELINES1. Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
2. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
3. Maintains contact with external constituents and solicits feedback for improved University Relations.
4. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
5. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
6. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
7. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.
8. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelors degree required
Associate Director for Development: 1-3 years in fundraising and/or transferrable professional skills that include sales and/or developing relationships with high net worth clients or customers.
Director for Development: 3-5 years in fundraising and/or transferrable professional skills that include sales and/or developing relationships with high net worth clients or customers.
