The NU Student Support Specialist is part of a comprehensive team whose aim is to provide holistic support services and outreach to all NU Global students from interest pathway transitions graduation and beyond. The Student Support Specialist counsels students on the procedures and requirements of NU Global Boston based programs (Global Pathways, American Classroom, USPP Summer Bridge) by interpreting the relevant academic and administrative policies and guidelines for the university. S/he offers an objective analysis of students' academic records and abilities, and further assists students in exploring future academics and careers; setting and achieving goals; and preparing for success in the United States and university environment. The NU Global Student Support Specialist prepares and revises materials, such as program guides, handouts, and online communications including email and the student support website. Additionally, the Student Support Specialist actively reaches out and collaborates closely with instructors, other departments, and colleges to ensure a coordinated approach to student success. The NU Global Student Support Specialist maintains academic records, actively monitors attendance and class performance, plans and executes intervention strategies, and supports students through both one-on-one meetings and group meetings to help students access academic and non-academic resources on campus, online and in the community.
The NU Global Student Support Specialist also assists in the coordination of the New Student Arrival Programs, activities related to progression through, transition from, and completion of their program, and participates in the development, planning, and implementation of college recruiting functions. Additionally, the NU Global Student Support Specialist participates in programming and projects that further extend GSS services, these could include (but are not limited to) organizing student ambassadors, coordinating tutoring services, developing special events, or teaching specialized courses. The NU Global Student Support Specialist should take proactive steps to improve communication to, and between, students and faculty as well as take an active role in enhancing the existing systems and reporting mechanisms to better serve NU Global students. The Student Support Specialist should serve as students' advocate and liaison to internal and external constituencies and as an agent for change necessary to promote success for NU Global students, while maintaining the mission of NU Global and Northeastern.
Bachelors degree and at least three years experience providing support to students in a higher education setting. Masters degree preferred. Demonstrated experience working with international students. Previous experience in higher education is preferred. Strong organizational, analytical and interpersonal communication (both verbal and written) is necessary. Computer skills and experience in working with databases and student management systems desirable. Ability to learn and effectively utilize the College and University-level computer systems in day-to-day student support is necessary. Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and to juggle many activities simultaneously, take initiative, follow through with projects and to work as an integral member of a team is necessary.
