School of Medicine - Biomedical and Health Informatics
General Duties: The Chair is responsible for providing leadership in fulfilling the multiple missions of the department. In so doing, the Chair serves as the chief officer for academic affairs, faculty affairs, and budget management of the department. The Chair is responsible for fulfilling the duties assigned by the Dean.

Be a recognized scholar and researcher in a chosen area of interest related to biomedical informatics and clinical research
Have a strong history of extramural funding from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health
Possess an entrepreneurial spirit in order to set a vision and implement a growth plan for a new department
Be committed to excellence in graduate education and have documented expertise in classroom teaching
Possess strong personnel and fiscal management skills
Be committed to recruitment and development of faculty in the department
Motivate department research activity through demonstrated leadership
Engage in partnerships across the School, the University and the community for education and research
Develop a departmental strategic plan and update it on a regular basis
Serve as an ambassador for the department across the academic medical community at UMKC and other Kansas City life sciences facilities
Support School-wide success through support of faculty development in clinical research
Develop and maintain a core service component in biostatistics
Develop and manage graduate education programs
Recruit, mentor and develop faculty
Recruit and mentor graduate students
Prepare, manage, and adhere to an annual budget
Recruit, orient, and maintain a faculty and staff adequate to fulfill departmental missions
Supervise and assign faculty and staff to meet departmental commitments
Ensure that staff and faculty adhere to all applicable policies and procedures
Conduct an annual evaluation of each faculty and staff member
Ensure faculty development in scholarly activity
Actively engage faculty and staff in departmental decision-making
Ensure faculty and staff participation on committees
Ensure participation and adherence to all compliance activities
Ensure effective communication to disseminate information and advance the interests of the department and faculty
The chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine. The chair interacts with the Schools of Computing and Engineering and Biological Sciences for the joint master degree program in bioinformatics. The chair interacts with chairs of clinical departments, faculty and residents in clinical and basic science departments in order to manage a core consultation service program for biostatistics. The chair interacts with student affairs for admissions and support services for students. The chair interacts with the governing councils of the School of Medicine, including the Graduate Education Council.
The chair position is an administrative appointment, and will receive an annual written performance evaluation of administrative activities by the Dean. A track record of scholarly achievements sufficient to qualify for a tenured faculty position.
A commitment to teaching and education
The vision and leadership skills to build on the existing strengths of the department
Preference given to individuals with a background in bioinformatics, epidemiology, health services research, biostatistics, health informatics or a related discipline
Experience in leadership and administration in interdisciplinary research is desired
A track record in extramural grant support
The ability to collaborate across disciplines and institutions
The ability to recruit, mentor and develop faculty
