UW Medicine Patient Financial Services is a shared services department, located in the UW Tower building. As part of the University of Washington, UW Medicine includes UW Medical Center (UWMC) and Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Patient Financial Services is responsible for the patient accounting functions for UWMC and HMC, including billing for inpatient and outpatient medicine services provided at the Medical Centers.
Our PATIENT FINANCIAL SERVICES department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time PATIENT FINANCIAL SERVICES SPECIALIST 2.
Handles a very high volume of calls in a highly structured environment working under a set schedule and tight timeframes.
Provides excellent customer service to patients, families and third parties with the goal of putting Patients First.
In addition the PATIENT FINANCIAL SERVICES SPECIALIST 2 will handle specific requests and works to resolve the patient's entire account during a single call.
Resolves patient requests in one call or successfully manages prolonged or complex issues toward resolution.
Provides thorough and concise documentation on each call to ensure timely, appropriate transfer of information as a reference to other staff and other departments.
Works with patients on behalf of Financial Counselors to ensure applications for assistance are complete and thorough prior to first review.
Acts as a liaison between patients and billing department to resolve complicated billing issues resulting in a clear understanding of outcome.
Accesses insurance portals for verification of insurance coverage information to assure accuracy in billing and makes updates accordingly.
Coordinates with Interpreter Services as indicated.
Performs billing adjustments, initiates rebilling, stop bills and makes payment transfers within set guidelines.
Recognizes when patients are frustrated or may require education or instruction beyond the issue at hand.
Defuses conflicting or hostile situations with minimal supervisory assistance.
Manages calls and responsibilities in accordance with the PFS Quality Audit Policy and Procedure.
Performs research and resolution to all other patient billing inquiries as Required.
This individual will prepare UB, HCFA, ADA and other utilized billing forms via paper or electronic means; prepare Accounts Receivable (A/R) transactions; access computer databases to obtain eligibility information; update patient demographic and financial information; communicate with Medical Centers' staff, patients and/or third party payors as required to obtain or verify billing information or payment, and answer questions/ resolve concerns; document specific actions taken on individual accounts in the EPIC HB system.
This position is responsible for considering the status of the entire patient account and for exercising judgment to determine appropriate course of action for resolution of the patient account in its entirety
High School graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience in an appropriately related patient accounting function.
ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
1-2 years in a customer service and problem resolution preferably in a medical environment or equivalent education/experience.
Ability to evaluate patient accounts for accurate reimbursement, refund, financial assistance allowance or acceptable payment arrangements.
Knowledge of Epic System functionality.
Knowledge of accounting principles
Experience interacting and communicating with diverse population using sensitivity, tact and discretion.
Experience with Medical Billing.
Experience with Medical Insurance eligibility, benefits and/or medical claims.
High level of skill in entering data and researching on-line while talking with patients.
Ability to keyboard a minimum of 45 wpm with 90% accuracy.
Proven excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to multi task.
Proven ability to analyze and resolve complex issues.
Ability to maintain the highest standards of confidentiality.
