Under the supervision of the Ancillary Services Director and Clinical Operations Analyst, using medical background and training, the Medical Billing Specialist performs a wide variety of tasks for Student Health Services, notably in medical billing, but also with health insurance.
UCSC Student Health Services (SHS) is a full service medical facility offering a complex integration of primary care medical services, counseling and psychiatric services, and ancillary services to students on the UCSC campus. SHS manages the health care needs of approximately 200 patients per day and is supported by an operating budget of $20 million.
Major responsibilities include conducting accurate medical, optometry and pharmacy billing and coding as well as insurance claim submissions. Job duties include auditing and analysis of data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), the application of fees to the student bursar accounts, and the application of insurance reimbursements to SHS accounts. Maintaining and updating the transaction codes, references, and prices in the EMR is an additional function. This position responds to customer service inquiries and is required to comply with all HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) and FERPA (Federal Education Records Protection Act) requirements.
Knowledge of the following: Medical terminology, Anatomy and physiology, Diagnostic tests, Medical office procedures, CPT and ICD-10 coding
Substantial experience with medical billing and coding in a complex medical clinic environment
Experience with customer service in a medical billing or health insurance environment with the ability to listen, anticipate needs, and respond quickly to problems or complaints
Experience with a computerized practice management system including demonstrated proficiency in medical billing functions
Experience abstracting reports and analyzing data from multiple information systems
