The Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering have an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1. This position serves as a research scientist for the interdisciplinary Molecular Information Systems Research Laboratory, working independently with supervision and guidance from the Principal Investigators.
This lab supports a funded research project that seeks to explore ways of building computer systems with silicon-based and biological parts. Specific focus is on the identification of systematic design rules for the de novo construction of hybrid silicon and biological circuits with DNA.
The primary purpose of this position is to serve in a research capacity to help perform experiments with DNA synthesis and sequencing. The research scientist is responsible for taking on leadership of the day-to-day oversight and coordination of laboratory operations, as well provide experimental and operational support for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. The position includes a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to the following: - Assist researchers in preparing and performing experiments; - Analyze data from experiments, including writing Python programs to analyze large data sets; - Lead and direct assigned personnel in laboratory work; - Set up and calibrate laboratory instruments, read and record instrument data, reduce and tabulate data, keep laboratory records; - Perform minor maintenance and repair of laboratory apparatus and instruments; - Order laboratory supplies and stock laboratory areas as required; - May review relevant literature and contribute data for reports and publications; - Attend research group meetings and area seminars; - Ensure waste is properly disposed and coordinated with UW Environmental Health and Safety; - Ensure all lab members are properly certified and that the safety manual is up to date; - Ensure that lab is kept supplied, clean and organized, with help of lab technicians; and - Perform related duties as required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, or related scientific field and one year experience working in a biomedical laboratory. -Experience providing day-to-day oversight and coordination of operations in a wet laboratory. - Previous experience with DNA manipulation; knowledge of DNA sequencing instruments and analyzing sequencing instrument output data. - Previous experience with Next Generation Sequencing instruments. - Previous experience working with basic biomedical lab techniques such as PCR, cloning, sterile technique, and maintaining stocks. - Significant experience with manipulating DNA with PCR, gel imaging, ligation, etc. - Strong organizational and communication skills; experience ordering and organizing lab equipment and supplies. - Demonstrated ability to understand and follow established experimental protocols. Ability to learn new research techniques. - Ability to collect data in a consistent, reliable and accurate manner. - Experience writing code in a popular programming language (e.g., Python). - Experience writing scripts for data analysis. - Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team. - Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. - Demonstrated problem-solving skills, strong detail orientation and ability to adeptly manage multiple deadline dependent priorities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
