JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Animal Science at the University of Wyoming is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Animal Genetics. This 9-month tenure track position will have 60% research, 30% teaching, 5% advising and 5% service responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program that generates and/or uses genomic data to identify and explain trait variation. Research would be expected to target questions with the potential to improve production efficiency in food animals. Participation in interdisciplinary efforts to enhance the Department’s research in additional focus areas of ruminant nutrition, reproductive physiology, or meat science is encouraged. Opportunities for collaboration exist with the Department’s Center for the Study of Fetal Programming, the Veterinary Science and Molecular Biology departments, and the University’s Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Reproductive Biology Interdisciplinary programs. Teaching/advising responsibilities would include the undergraduate course in animal breeding and genetics, other courses consistent with the successful candidate’s expertise/interests and needs of the department and undergraduate advising. Preference will be given to applicants that desire to develop a dynamic graduate training program.
Excellent research facilities that house a flock of approximately 250 breeding ewes, a herd of 250 beef cows and multiple laboratory animal housing facilities are provided by the Laramie Research and Extension Center (LREC). This Center, located approximately 5 miles from campus, has group feeding facilities and a Grow Safe system for individual intake data collection with sheep and cattle. These facilities are supplemented by a multipurpose research unit equipped with metabolism and surgery facilities to support intensive research investigations. Furthermore, the Center for Fetal Programming, a unit of LREC, has additional and unique resources available. Well – equipped research laboratory space and excellent technical support that is provided by research staff accompany this position. A modern, well-staffed meat laboratory is also available within the Animal Science Department to support research and teaching endeavors. In addition to a range of Campus Core Facilities to support research, the UW Advanced Research Computing Center (https://arcc.uwyo.edu/content/home) provides access to world-class computational resources.

An earned doctorate in Animal Science or related field with emphasis in quantitative or molecular genetics of animals
Documented interest in integration of quantitative and molecular genetics applications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Evidence of ability and desire to teach undergraduate students
Record of publishing research in refereed Journals
Evidence of desire and capacity and obtain extramural funding for research
Experience in molecular genetic and genomic applications to the whole animal
Knowledge of and interest in food animal agriculture
Evidence of potential to build and sustain a nationally competitive research program
Evidence of ability and desire to train graduate students
Exhibit promise in interdisciplinary and collaborative research efforts
