| The Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) was formed in 1997 when the Departments of Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cellular Toxicology and Tropical Public Health were merged at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The Department focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological and ecological aspects of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases of animals and humans, including the vectors that transmit infectious agents. Research in the Department's 14 laboratories is primarily focused on diseases of developing countries.|
The Research Administration Manager supervises a team of 4-6 grant managers and support staff. S/he will work closely with the Finance Manager and Associate Director of Finance in collaboratively and comprehensively managing the research administration needs of the Department. Collectively, the team supports approximately 12 Principal Investigators.
The primary responsibility of the position is staff management and development and in creating and maintaining a high functioning team in a service-oriented culture. The position requires interaction with senior staff in the Office of Financial Services, Sponsored Programs Administration, the Office of Sponsored Programs and other central support offices.
In addition to the managerial and team-oriented responsibilities, there are three major areas of functional responsibility:
Pre- and Post-Award Management: S/he is responsible for the management of sponsored (federal and non-federal), unrestricted, gift and endowment awards within faculty portfolios. This area includes supervising the preparation of grant proposals, progress reports and financial reports for funding agencies. The Research Administration Manager also ensures that IACUC and IRB requirements are in effect.
Compliance: S/he works with the Associate Director of Finance to develop and implement department policies and best practices. S/he advises Principal Investigators, and research and administrative staff, on fiscal policies and procedures, including federal and Harvard University policies and any other grant regulations. S/he also provides training to staff, students and fellows in financial procedures and related policies, oversees Departmental response to a variety of school-wide reports and requests for information, responds to audit requests, manages the Departmental compliance review process, and serves as the Department's primary effort coordinator -- including oversight of internal tracking mechanisms.
Financial and Administrative: S/he reviews and approves financial transactions including accounts payable, reimbursements, corporate card settlements, wire transfers, personnel costing changes, and general ledger entries. S/he also works with the Associate Director to submit annual fiscal budget for the Department, provides financial reports, projections, and strategic planning to Principal Investigators and to the Director and Associate Director as needed, works in collaboration with the Finance Manager in maintaining fiscal health of faculty portfolios, and resolves administrative issues -- including allocation of resources, compliance with financial policies, and appropriateness of expenses.
