Director of Faculty Diversity Engagement
The George Mason University Office of Compliance, Diversity and Ethics is seeking applications for a Director of Faculty Diversity Engagement. This newly created director position will be critical to implementing Mason's vision to institutionalize our diversity and inclusion initiatives and become a nationally recognized leader among peer institutions for educational excellence as a diverse, inclusive and global university. The Director of Faculty Diversity Engagement will be responsible for creating and coordinating initiatives and programs across Mason campuses in support of faculty professional development for diversity and inclusion. The position will also play a key leadership role as Mason seeks to recruit and retain diverse faculty, design inclusive learning experiences and curricula, foster an inclusive climate for learning, explore early-entry faculty pipeline initiatives, and ultimately, support student success.
The director will collaborate closely with University Life, the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Enrichment, and Human Resources and Payroll; and will report to the Vice President of Compliance, Diversity and Ethics.
1. Leadership for Diversity and Inclusion Faculty Professional Development Activities:
- Create collaborative and interdisciplinary alliances around existing diversity and inclusion initiatives;
- Develop and share existing diversity and inclusion resources to improve campus climate;
- Cultivate opportunities for faculty mentoring to retain faculty of color;
- Create, in collaboration with campus stakeholders, cultural competency programming and additional opportunities for sustained dialogue for individual departments and colleges/schools;
- Lead, in collaboration with academic units and faculty, efforts to integrate diversity and inclusion into curricular and cocurricular initiatives; and
- Teach at least one course annually.
2. Leadership for Early-Entry Faculty of Color Pipeline Development:
- Work collaboratively with the Provost's Office, Office of Graduate Education, Vice President of Research and others to research, evaluate and assist in development of early-entry faculty pipeline initiatives such as a postdoctoral fellowship program.
3. Leadership for Recognition of Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion:
In collaboration with the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Enrichment, support the nomination and selection process for awards recognizing faculty members' inclusive excellence. The candidate should be able to evidence:
- Knowledge and understanding of current professional development approaches around the development, implementation and assessment of diversity and inclusion;
- A strong commitment to educational excellence regarding the integration of diversity and inclusion into the curriculum;
- Administrative experience or other examples of effectively coordinating and communicating with faculty, staff and administrators across the disciplines;
- Strong leadership, particularly around building collaborative teams, and success working with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrated success with project management; and
- A record of teaching excellence as an instructional faculty member, especially with respect to utilizing inclusive strategies.
We seek candidates who are flexible, well-organized, inquisitive, resourceful, detail-oriented, creative, ethical, and able to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks in order to thrive in our busy, diverse and collaborative environment. A Ph.D. is required, and field of study is open. Successful candidates will have demonstrable experience in teaching, scholarship or service related to diversity and inclusion.
Proven track record in grant writing and solicitation of external funding for research or diversity and inclusion initiatives.
