The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing 2,800 local health departments has an opening for a graduate level intern supporting the Medical Reserve Corps program. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a network of community-based units initiated and established by local organizations to meet the public health needs of their communities. It is sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), US Department of Health and Human Services. The MRC consists of medical and non-medical volunteers who contribute to local health initiatives and provide the structure necessary to pre-identify, credential, train, and activate medical and public health volunteers. NACCHO’s MRC Program, through a cooperative agreement with the Program Office, serves as an essential partner providing challenge awards, core competency, and leadership training directly to units and LHDs throughout the nation.This is a great opportunity for a Masters’ level student interested in assisting with a major research project profiling the MRC network of over 800 community based MRC units, assisting in the development of training and resource tools, and identifying promising practices of MRC projects in the areas Community Resiliency, Community Public Health Initiatives, and Community Partner Collaborations. The internship will provide an opportunity for students to obtain relevant work experience to be competitive for future positions in public health, public policy, or related fields. Applicants should have experience or interest in community public health and/or public health emergency preparedness.Salary: $15.00/hour FLSA Classification: Non-ExemptNATURE OF INTERNSHIP DUTIESThe intern will be primarily responsible for supporting the NACCHO Medical Reserve Corps staff fulfill project requirements of the MRC Cooperative Agreement. The project aims to increase awareness and understanding of the MRC program; promote, support, and build capacity within the MRC network; enhance cooperation between MRC and local/state/federal authorities to support and increase MRC capacities at the local level; and expand the efforts and capabilities of local MRC units to support their community-based public health, preparedness and response initiatives. The intern’s work duties may include but are not limited to: • Conducting challenge award project reviews• Researching topics and writing articles for newsletter/blog articles • Assisting with the collection of qualitative data through project coordinator interviews• Assisting with quantitative analysis from the MRC network profile• And assisting with the development of eLearning resources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS• Current enrollment as a graduate level student in an accredited college or university with a graduate study focus on public health, public policy, or related field. • Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system; • Demonstrated knowledge of, or interest in, community public health and/or public health emergency preparedness and response.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’S) Knowledge• Interest in governmental and community public health initiatives • Knowledge of the social determinants of health • Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment.Skills • Strong interpersonal skills • Strong organizational skills• Strong written and oral communication skills • Medium-level computer skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word and strong Excel Preferred: Medium-level skills with qualitative research.Abilities • Ability to synthesize information for written and oral reporting • Ability to communicate well on the phone and in person • Ability to multitask • Ability to organize work projects and complete tasks within assigned time frames • Ability to work effectively within teams • Ability to work independently as necessary to achieve high performance • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in all aspects of work WORK DURATION & CONDITIONS• Negotiable and flexible between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:30pm; approximately 20 hours per week.
