SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Chief of University Police
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Subordinate personnel including lieutenants, sergeants, officers, dispatchers, and civilian staff within the university police department.
General Statement of Duties: With minimal supervision of the Chief of University Police, the Captain serves as the primary supervisor of various divisions within the department, ensuring that a community policing model is demonstrated by the department. The incumbent of this position is the second-in-command to the Chief and oversees the day-to-day operations of the department. This individual will provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Chief.

1.(E) Supervises university lieutenants, sergeants, officers, dispatchers, and civilians in day-to-day operations.
2.(E) Oversees and provides assistance to shift supervisors as needed.
3.(E) Provides input for, and may be wholly responsible for, the completion of evaluations of lieutenants, sergeants, officers, dispatchers, and civilian personnel.
4.(E) Manages on-site investigations and acts as a liaison to municipal, state, federal, and other university law enforcement agencies.
5.(E) Oversees evidence room management and associated documents.
6.(E) Develops and implements various training and crime prevention programs for departmental and other professional staff members.
7.(E) Ensures the department is operating with a community policing model.
8.(E) Coordinates staffing based on need for overtime, special events, etc., keeping in mind budgetary restrictions and contractual requirements.
9.(E) Represents the department at meetings as requested by the Chief.
10.(E) Serves as an essential employee, available in emergency situations.
11.(E) Oversees accreditation and other certification processes.
12.(E) Models behavior that is consistent with the high standards of a Captain and Worcester State employee.
13.Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.

15.Performs other duties as assigned.
1.Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field.
2.5 years of full-time experience as a police officer in a college/university, municipal, state, federal, or military department with a minimum of three years as a supervisor.
3.Graduated from a full basic police academy and eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer under Chapter 22C, Section 63 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
4.Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid driver's license.
5.Possession of, and ability to maintain, a license to carry a firearm. (LTC)
6.Experience in working with diverse populations and the ability to work with young adults, faculty, and staff in a diverse environment.
7.Ability to work with other police agencies in a positive and professional manner.
9.Experience and training related to investigations and crime scene processing.
10.Knowledge of certification and accreditation processes.
