Utica College, a small comprehensive college in Upstate New York, is seeking a On-Call Circulation Assistant who is responsible for circulation functions, shelf maintenance, and supervision of student assistants. Charges library materials in and out; assists patrons looking for books; checks the library for out of place library materials and reshelves them. Processes reserves and interlibrary loan. In charge of the library when a librarian is not on duty. Responsible for opening and closing the library. May cross-train in other areas while still performing the duties of circulation assistant.

Primary responsibilities include:
Charges and discharges library materials for patrons, including books from the main collection, course reserves, and library laptops. Provides directional information and refers library users to appropriate reference area; Assists patrons in finding books or journals and provides basic reference assistance when no librarian is on duty; Interprets and enforces library policy when librarian is not on duty, and responsible for maintaining an atmosphere conducive to studying and research; Supervises student assistants working at the circulation desk in their duties. When no librarian is in the library, supervises information desk student assistants; Assists in student worker training in circulation policies and procedures. Responsible for procedures being followed by student workers and checks their work; Assists with interlibrary loan and reserve processing; Follows procedures for opening and closing the library at established hours. Makes sure building is secure at closing; Maintains patron records and their confidentiality. Determines and assigns library privileges to visitors; Performs general checks for neatness and for books out of place, sort and shelves library materials and assists with shifting library collections; Refills and removes jams from copiers; Performs other duties as assigned and/or assists with special projects as are required by circumstance; Works with supervisor to develop specific goals that support Utica College’s operational plans. This is done at least annually through the annual performance evaluation process, however review of goals will occur throughout the year; Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators.
An Associate degree is required; Supervisory experience desirable; Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel; email and Internet skills; Ability to deal courteously and effectively with a wide variety of constituents; Excellent communication skills; Ability to work accurately with attention to detail; Ability to maintain confidentiality; Ability to adapt to changes in workflow and procedures; Ability to work well independently and in a team environment; Ability to organize one’s own workplace and find needed information quickly; Ability to organize time and work assignments effectively; Willingness to acquire and maintain up-to-date computer skills at the level necessary to perform a job; Ability to train and supervise work study students; Knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology is desirable.
