The Design Manager will collaborate with key stakeholders to set creative directionfrom concept development through execution and brand management including resource allocation and managementfor a wide variety of creative projects including, but not limited to, print collateral, direct mail, integrated campaigns, space and product design, digital communications and rich media targeted at a range of audiences. As such, the Designer Manager is responsible for translating strategic marketing goals into end-products that visually align with Northeastern University's value proposition, brand guidelines and best practices for achieving results. The Designer Manager will collaborate with marketing leads, subject matter experts and consult branding guidelines and personnel to transfer objectives for an initiative into clear, actionable, concise design work for various audiences and channels.
This position supports high volume marketing teams that requires quality work delivered in a timely manner. The Designer Manager will specifically own the execution of all print, direct mail, and physical collateral and manage the work of staff and freelance designers responsible for its execution. The Design Manager owns the relationship with our print and mail production vendors including evaluating materials costs, quality and production schedules in support of go to market goals. They will also provide visual design oversite for the team responsible for executing digital marketing tactics via the web and email and in that capacity, must have a firm understanding of responsive design, interaction design, email design, UX design and usability best practices in order to effectively provide visual design direction to staff responsible for interaction design and UX design.
The Design Manager will join a management team including a Project Manager, Managing Editor, Managing Web Architect and Digital Analytics Manager and reports to the AVP of Digital Experience. They will have management oversite of a junior designer and a roster of independent contractors responsible for providing design and production support.
The Creative Team works in close collaboration with both the Undergraduate and Graduate Marketing leadership to develop an effective strategy and measurement plan that both achieves the University's enrollment goals and ensures the optimal experience for our Learners.
Bachelors Degree (B.S. or B.F.A.) in Graphic Design or related field.
7-10 years of integrated design experience (corporate or agency).
Experience with high-level branding, creating complex design systems and concepting projects with a writer is essential.
Comfortable coaching and mentoring junior designs in pushing their design execution regardless of medium or channel.
Advanced knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Powerpoint, Word, and Excel).
Familiarity with responsive web design and email & landing page best practices required.
Strong knowledge in pre-press, printing, and Web standards.
Employs solid knowledge of graphic design, user interface design, usability methodology, information architecture, industry standards and trends, platform and browser capabilities and web constraints to create consistent, accessible, intuitive interactive web-based tools that enhance the users experience and promote learning.
Creative thinking, critical analysis and problem-solving skills, along with flexibility/adaptability are essential must possess comfort in a rapidly changing environment with competing and shifting priorities.
Ability to frame issues in clear, logical constructs, utilize segment knowledge and conceptual thinking is critical.
Strong project management skills with an affinity for producing consistently high-quality work and yield with a customer focus.
Strong achievement orientation, solid planning and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated results in a matrixed organization.
Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor plus fluid communication and presentation skills with the ability to present and sell their work.
