The Assistant Director of Research Compliance shall provide leadership and management of the Universityâ??s laboratory safety programs including general laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, biological safety, radiation safety (ionizing and non0ionizing). This position will help ensure the safety of faculty, students, and staff working in laboratories by providing and ensuring attendance for all applicable training programs, regular laboratory inspections, consultations, accident investigations, and emergency response services. Duties include ensuring compliance with applicable regulations such as OSHA Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories (29 CFR 1910.1450), OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), RI Department of Health Radiation Control Agency Rules and the Universityâ??s Broad scope Radioactive Materials License, NIH Rules for working with Biological Agents and others. This position will direct and manage the radiation and biological safety staff and overall laboratory safety and compliance programs. The Assistant Director of Research Compliance will also represent EHS for all research related issues and provide leadership and management when the Director is unavailable, particularly for emergency situations and regulatory inspections.
â?¢ Minimum of a Bachelorâ??s of Science or the equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to ensure success in this management position. Masterâ??s degree preferred.
â?¢ Proven experience successfully managing employees to maximize productivity, minimizing down time and fostering an environment where employees are motivated, professional and customer oriented.
â?¢ 8 years minimum experience providing research support services including laboratory safety, biological safety and radiation safety to university community or similar. Familiarity with all relevant regulations at the federal, state and local level.
â?¢ Excellent written and verbal communications skills necessary.
â?¢ Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and be willing to shift planned work to help resolve issues that arise.
â?¢ Must have the ability to lift up to 55 pounds, access all areas of the University and be able to wear personal protective equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
â?¢ Must be available to cover a rotating on-call schedule and respond to hazardous materials and other emergencies nights, weekends and holidays.
