The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Medicine is currently recruiting for Laboratory Research Specialists to work within the Departments of Medicine and Anesthesiology. This position will function as a single specialist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research project (s) an overseeing laboratory research activities.
Our projects address signaling mechanisms involved in the cytoskeletal regulation of lung vascular permeability and inflammation under physiological and pathological conditions, Primary research involves cell culture and animal models of vascular endothelial dysfunction and acute lung injury.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Perform laboratory research activities such as: mammaliam cell culture, DNA and siRNA transfections, ELISA, fixed cell immunofluorescence, co-immunoprecipitation and pull-down assays, western blot analysis; protein biochemistry (such as subcellular protein fractionation, column chromatography, kinase assays, protein phosphorylation, and surface biotinylation).
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including ensuring quality control and safety compliance, making buffers, routine maintenance of equipment, and ordering supplies.
Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research findings.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in a relevant research specialization.
Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferred: Master's Degree in a related field of study preferred.
