Our Department of Statistics has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist System Administrator/Web Developer.
Statistics is seeking a well-rounded, highly experienced individual with great communication skills. Job skill development and opportunities for growth are available. This is a highly independent position that reports to the Director of IT for the Department of Statistics.
As the System Administrator / Web Developer you will be responsible for:
Develop and maintain the departmental websites and the creation of web based applications, including a graduate student applicant and tracking application, account management and billing application and other web based applications in support of the operation of the department.
Web application project planning and assignment of feature development to a student web developer, providing guidance, monitor progress and participating in code reviews and testing.
Provide website consultation services to others within the department.
Delivering outstanding systems support. You will also be expected to proactively identify areas for improvement, drive projects, build user relationships and successfully implement changes in the environment.
Participate in the planning and implementation of new applications and emerging technologies into the production environment, including coordinating and executing changes at the hardware, platform and application level.
Understanding in deep technical detail each component of the physical and virtual desktop environment and how it interacts with the corresponding server infrastructure across multiple OS platforms (Windows, OS X and Linux).
Carrying out root cause analysis based on application performance, system monitoring, and reliability metrics and support incidents to maintain high-availability and improve efficiencies.
Developing and contributing to documentation for new and existing applications and systems in line with recognized standards.
Responsible for planning and execution of tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
Serve as backup to the Linux System Administrator.
Flexibility to perform occasional work outside of normal business hours/days (quarterly maintenance window, critical infrastructure downtime).
Typical duties include (but are not limited to) the following:
Develop and launch a new department website using a CMS based approach.
Develop a web based application to review and track graduate student applications.
Deploy and upgrade Windows based servers as needed.
Provide direction and leadership for student web developer and helpdesk employees.
Maintain desktop imaging systems and remote computing resources such as Windows Terminal Servers and a VMware based virtual computing lab.
Monitor and respond to alerts of service outages with a goal of minimizing downtime and ensuring system stability.
Provide Tier 2 support to the helpdesk for Windows and OS X based systems.
Perform performance monitoring and assessment resource utilization to ensure peak potential of the computing infrastructure.
Deploy and upgrade Linux based servers as needed.

| A successful candidate will meet most of the following requirements: |
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field. Equivalent experience may substitute for the educational requirements.
Five+ years of professional experience in a complex information systems environment.
Three+ years of web development and application support.
Experience building fast and scalable RESTful APIs and experience designing scalable data models.
Thorough knowledge of the jQuery API, DOM API, HTML and CSS and solid experience creating, maintaining and writing queries for relational databases such as MS-SQL and MySQL.
Experience working with content-management systems (CMS);
Exceptional knowledge of core concepts of Windows operating systems and experience working with Microsoft System Center products, including imaging and deployment tools.
Strong understanding of Microsoft technologies including Windows Server 2012 R2 and later, networking, Group Policy management, clustering and command-line-scripting.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of users with varying technical abilities.
Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS and Ethernet networking technologies.
Strong organizational, task-management and prioritization skills.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
