The Software Engineer is a member of the Information Technology team at the Yale Center for British Art at Yale University. The engineer contributes to the Center's technology program, which includes supporting open access to collections online through the application of linked data standards, the development of software in support of research initiatives, and the migration of the Center's collection search and online exhibition sites to new platforms. The engineer will be expected to engage in community development of software such as Blacklight, Spotlight, and Mirador, and to develop fluency in data standards relevant to the cultural heritage community, including the CIDOC-CRM, International Image Interoperability Framework (IIF), and LIDO. The position offers significant opportunities for creative collaboration with curators and staff in the design and development of new applications and features. The engineer will also be expected to represent the Center and its technology initiatives at conferences and events.
The Yale Center for British Art houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. Presented to the University by Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929), the collection reflects the development of British Art and culture from the Elizabethan period onward. The Center's collections include more than 2,000 paintings and 250 sculptures, 20,000 drawings and watercolors, 40,000 prints and 35,000 rare books and manuscripts. More than 40,000 volumes supporting research in British art and related fields are available in the Center's Reference Library. Opened to the public in 1977, the Yale Center for British Art is the last building designed by the internationally acclaimed American architect Louis I Kahn.

Required Skill/ability 1: Demonstrated experience in the development of medium to large scale software projects using Ruby on Rails, including testing with RSpec.
Required Skill/ability 3: Familiarity with the development and use of REST APIs.
Required Skill/ability 4: Demonstrated knowledge of GitHub.
Required Skill/ability 5: Experience with cloud infrastructure or platform services such as AWS or Heroku.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Demonstrated contribution to open space source software or experience working with distributed teams. Familiarly with the principles of linked data. Knowledge of Apache Solr, Microsoft SQL Server, or Gallery Systems' TMS product. Knowledge of an additional programming language such as Python or Java.
Required Licenses Or Certifications:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
