University Relations is seeking to fill multiple Director of Communications positions. The Director of Communications plans, executes, and evaluates a comprehensive communications and marketing program for the unit it serves, and aligns those activities with university wide communications, marketing and branding initiatives. The director will have a strong record of progressive experience in today's communications fields, which includes evidence of strong writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills; proficiency in using word processing, image processing, content management system, and social media tools; must also have a strong understanding of effective graphic design and branding principles and the use of the Internet as a medium of communication; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. This position will work collaboratively with the members of the unit's advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement.
Current openings are available in the following areas: College of Architecture and Urban Studies, Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, and Office of Alumni Relations. Positions will report jointly to the Assistant Vice President for University Relations and the respective area.

Office of Alumni Relations
A central part of the university's Advancement Division, provides engagement opportunities for more than 250,000 alumni located in all 50 states and around the world. Alumni Relations supports a dynamic array of engagement opportunities, including more than 130 alumni chapters, continuing education programs, social events, travel programs, and mentoring experiences with current students.
Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation
At $513 million, Virginia Tech is currently ranks #39 overall in the National Science Foundation's annual survey of higher education research expenditures, #23 among public research universities. Virginia Tech continues to rank in the top 5 percent of universities in the nation in research expenditures and is the only Virginia institution in the top 50. College of Architecture and Urban Studies
The college is composed of four primary units: The School of Architecture and Design, the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, the School of Public and International Affairs, and the School of Visual Arts. The college's architecture and interior design programs are ranked among the top five in the nation by DesignIntellegence. The college is composed of 11 undergraduate and 13 graduate degree programs based in Blacksburg and Alexandria, Virginia, and the college has an international location in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.
Bachelor's degree and relevant experience or Master's degree.
Ability to define goals and objectives, identify target audiences, and develop and implement strategic plans to accomplish and measure progress towards communications goals.
Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing.
Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and evaluate a comprehensive communications program.
Experience in a higher education, independent school, or non-profit environment.
Strong skills using technology in the workplace; familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, social media competencies.
Demonstrated experience leading people, either as a supervisor, a colleague collaborating with others, or both.
Experience working with alumni engagement initiatives.
Experience working with a variety of creative communications, data analytics, e-mail management, and web content management software platforms.
Ability to communicate highly technical or scientific content to a general audience. (Research and Innovation).
