The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S. Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Senior Computer Specialist.
The position is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure.
This individual will team with other APL-IT staff to define needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development; technical analysis and design; and support executing, testing and rolling-out solutions.
Manage the day-to-day operations of the APL-UW systems by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair.
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
Develop procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of APL-UW-IT systems and client supported systems.
Co-develop APL-UW-IT system lifecycle plan to management, deploy new systems as needed to replace older technologies.
Monitor system logs to identify any possible intrusions. Report concerns/anomalies to relevant team members.
Create and maintain documentation of tasks, procedures for relevant APL-UW IT systems.
Provide Tier II/other support for network services and operating system issues escalated by APL-UW-UW Help Desk and interact with staff as required.
Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
Install new / rebuild existing servers as directed.
Maintain existing and future servers that provide backups, file storage and VPN access.
Support LANs, WANs, network segments, internet, and intranet systems.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.
Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
Ensure network connectivity throughout a company's LAN/WAN infrastructure is on par with technical considerations.
Participate in the 24x7 rotating on-call responsibilities.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field. Equivalent experience may substitute for the educational requirements.
Five plus years of professional experience in a complex information systems environment.
Exceptional knowledge of Active Directory (OUs, GPOs).
Exceptional knowledge in defining, implementing and administering a complex environment on the AWS and/or AZURE platforms.
Exceptional knowledge of core concepts of Linux operating systems (Debian/Ubuntu/RedHat experience a plus) and experience working with Linux-based compute clusters.
Exceptional knowledge of server virtualization platforms, specifically KVM.
Working knowledge of database technologies (MySQL, MSSQL).
Working knowledge of electronic mail systems (Postfix, Exchange).
Working knowledge of Ansible server configuration management system.
Strong experience with GIT and GITLAB.
Strong experience with SSL Certs in a cross platform environment.
Strong experience with webserver technologies (Apache, IIS).
Strong understanding of Microsoft technologies including Windows Server 2012 R2, networking.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of users with varying technical abilities.
Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DNS and Ethernet networking technologies.
Strong organizational, task-management and prioritization skills.
Possesses excellent problem solving skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work in, at times, high stress, short deadline situations with the ability to remain professional and level-headed as well as being able to handle difficult clients in a professional manner.
Requires minimal supervision/support.
Ability to work outside normal business hours, including being on-call during weekends.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
