Job Summary Overview:
The Department of Industrial Design in the Division of Architecture and Design invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment to teach in the graduate and undergraduate programs at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin fall 2017.
Rhode Island School of Design recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. We welcome candidates whose experiences in teaching, creative practice/scholarship, professional practice, service, and personal experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
The ideal candidate will be a committed practicing designer and educator who is as passionate about teaching as she or he is about the field itself. As industrial design evolves, so must educators and practitioners, and as such, we seek a colleague who is engaged in and motivated by the breadth of contemporary practice. Candidates should be elastic thinkers and active makers engaged in a combination of professional practice, research, and classroom experience. They should be interested in joining a highly motivated community of students and faculty in a department that values our strong making traditions and exploring the boundaries of the field.
Known for its rigorous program and talented students, the department seeks candidates with the ability to engage and empower younger students learning foundational design principles and processes as well as facilitating the growth of our more seasoned students. Our ideal candidate combines a passionate depth of knowledge, leadership in the field, and the flexibility to work collaboratively with a diverse set of colleagues. Our department is made up of reflective practitioners and committed teachers who continue to grow and explore and we look for those qualities in our new colleague.
Job Qualifications Required:
A graduate degree in industrial design (or a closely and demonstrably related study) and a minimum 2–3 years of teaching experience is preferred (or equivalent combination of applicable academic and professional experience). Ideal candidates will exhibit the capacity to advise and teach both undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to the workings of the Department and the College, and be prepared to eventually rotate in and out of leadership positions. Rank will be based on professional and teaching experience.
