This position manages the engineering instructional technical support in undergraduate teaching laboratories and courses, working with the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Programs to ensure the requirements and academic priorities in the School of Engineering are met. This position requires thorough knowledge of safety required for lab areas, insuring proper methods. The incumbent will supervise the Senior Technical Assistants, assigning tasks and supervising instructional laboratory activities.
The position provides technical support in instructional disciplines, such as electrical sciences, computer engineering (ESCE), and others as needed in the School of Engineering. Responsibilities include maintaining existing course labs and providing general lab support to the ESCE group. The position is responsible for maintaining lab equipment, including specialized machines for building items;, ordering equipment and parts as needed; and maintaining a large inventory of electronics parts and specialized hardware. The incumbent is expected to develop expertise, and possess the ability to teach other users, on the use of equipment such as the circuit miller, stencil machine, pick-and-place, printed circuit oven, and rework machines. The position requires thorough knowledge of lab safety. The incumbent will provide support for electronic hardware design, assembly, testing, equipment and systems. Additional responsibilities include the design and assembly of small circuits such as integrators and pulse generators; printed circuit boards and their design tools; disassembling and reassembling electronic hardware, and building equipment economically. The incumbent will instruct students and Teaching Assistants in lab procedures, methods, and safety protocols for electrical and computer engineering, bioelectrical engineering, and other disciplines as needed. The incumbent will assist undergraduate students in honors thesis projects and independent study projects.
â?¢ Bachelorâ??s degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Physics or a related field and 3 to 5 years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required
â?¢ Minimum of two years of supervisory experience required, preferably in a higher ed environment
â?¢ Demonstrated ability to understand and use software design tools, such as for field-programmable gate array design flows and integrated-circuit design flows; and MATLAB
â?¢ Familiarity with analog and digital electronics, small-scale circuits, wiring, and computer interfacing
â?¢ Ability to develop skills at building equipment, including the best ways to intricately solder and desolder miniature parts
â?¢ Demonstrated ability to communicate technical issues and ideas
â?¢ Demonstrated strong communication skills
â?¢ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students and faculty
â?¢ Familiarity with basic engineering science lab equipment and techniques
â?¢ Familiarity with equipment trouble-shooting and repair using basic mechanical and electrical tools
